So I found my little guy, he's only 6 weeks old so we are expecting to bring.him home around February!!! I would love to hear suggestions on anything and everything. Favorite toys, treats etc. I'm a first time ekkie owner, and my last bird was an older rescue so I'm new to the baby thing as well ;). We are SO excited!!!!!

Most people look at me like I'm an idiot when I tell them I feed my bird hot chilies, she loves them. But they can eat them, so don't worry to them it's like eating some apple.
Sometimes I'll crush up some almonds and Chop the top off the chili, then put the crushed up almond on the inside, she LOVES them!
Her Fav toy is me.... Lol but she loves her big purple swing! Get him a big swing he will love it, scarlet does flips on hers and everything lol.
Good luck!

Oh by the way, it may take a while for him to warm up to you guys. I freaked out thinking Scarlet hated me for about a month after I got her, now she's one of the most tame birds I know, she will let me do anything, open her wings, pat her back, head, ect. She won't leave my side unless she has to, it's a complete turn around compared to the first month we had together!
Patience is the key, that's what everyone told me on here anyway, and it worked!

same:) most people spin out:) but birds cant feel the heat of the chillies

I don't blame them, I freaked out too first time I was told.. "I'm not giving my bird chillis are you stupid!" hahaha. Now I feel stupid lol.

Just be careful of the thank-you kiss afterwards... I often forget... lol

I hate chillis, anything hot actually. And I have made this mistake way to many times lol

My birds love chili pepper!!!!

When I brought home our two ekkies, Gracie is the most loving bird there is as she warmed up to us right away even on the way home. I drove over 3hrs to pick them up and bought a new cage along the way so I was quite cramped in the car, I'm a pretty tall guy. I had my seat pulled way up in a CRV because of the cage I bought for them on my way to pick them up. The distributor was along the way there so there it was perfect, I had to make multiple stops because it did not feel good driving like that...lol...

After bringing them home, I setup their new cage and allow them to get used to the new cage. JoJo I think was abused at one point as he was extremely shy and skittish....It took me less then a week to get him to step up for me. He is one loving bird now, BUT not towards strangers. He was like that towards his previous owners as well.

As long as you feed them the proper diet and train them properly, they're one of the most wonderful sweet babies you would ever own. Mine don't care too much for toys. They get excited during feeding time, so it's like treats for them all the time. We cook different types of stuffs for them often. I'm sure you'll do just fine with him.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Where is a good place for cage setup? Do you still want it to be where everyone is when you first bring them home??

Well I did, with both my birds, I guess it would be better to get him used to everyone and the noises happening in the house

I am getting my baby on Friday so we can learn together!! :)
Mine is 4 months old now.

One thing the breeder did mention is that he is still pretty clumsy and she is worried about me putting him in his big cage. I will be setting up a smaller starter cage instead since now she has me afraid...lol.
His real cage is HUGE so he could fall and hurt himself. I don't know if anyone else here has had problems w/ this.

What did you name yours? Ours is Vinny after Vincent Price since we got him on Halloween!

I will say to place them into a smaller size cage to start out with, OR you can go with the big cages but place the perches lower near the bottom of the cage. They're very clumsy while young and will fall and hurt themselves. I will also place food and water dishes lower too, if there's a grate, I would probably place it right on the grate. My breeder friend lives like 5 min from me, when she has ekkie babies I go visit to hold them. They're so adorable!!!! I still love my pair the best!!!! :)

My breeder is only 30 min but I didn't get the baby til he was almost weaned or I would have TOTALLY been a complete stalker!! :) 8AM - "KNOCK-KNOCK....can I come play w/ my baby?" :)

Vinny is gorgeous by the way, congrats. Great advice on cage!!! Right now the choices for names are Ollie (Oliver after Green Arrow. My boyfriend is a HUGE superman fan), and Donatello (Don after my sons favorite dinosaur character) and zeke, bc I like it lol. I love the name Vinny too!!! ;)

Any more advice/suggestions? When can you start using a play gym with the babies? Brands of harnesses people like?

KalJ, if your baby is going to be 16 weeks old when you take him home he should not be clumsy. He should be able to climb & fly very well.

My babies go into a big cage before they are weaned. I only just put a 10 week old male in a patio cage a few days ago & he is already climbing all over it.

I use the Aviator Harness, It's simple to use.

Play gyms are a favorite, mine love theirs. They hang out on it for hours.

I think the reason eclectus babies are classed as clumsy is because the breeder doesn't let the chicks practice flying. Given the opportunity to exercise their wings & be able to climb & explore is a great way for them to build up muscles.

Toys:- They love boings, cargo nets, bells & the activity toys, the ones they can press buttons & it makes a noise.

Now that is all covered, it's a good time to educate yourself on parrot behaviour & learn body language. If you understand your parrot & what he is trying to tell you, problems should never arise & if they do you will be better equiped to deal with them before they really get out of hand.

The cage cryrolfe has is ideal for a 4 month old. The only problem could be where the food dishes are located. But usually eclectus don't take to long to work out where the food is.

Awesome advice! I love the egg carton idea. With my amazon I would hide treats in rolled up natural unbleached coffee filters. Could even weave it around bars in cages, he loved it!!
