Cockatiels - Oz & Kaila
Hello!

I signed up here because I'm getting my very first bird today, a 3 month old cockatiel. I don't know if the seller is actually an experienced breeder (and that worries me a little) but he says the bird is male, tame and comes with a certificate.

So I'm here because I really want to get it right. I read up a lot about cockatiels, but there are still things I'm not sure about so I figured a forum was my best shot at doing things right for this bird =P I'm going to go get him a nice cage and toy before making the 30 minutes drive to get him and set it up for him before I take him home (I should clean the cage/toys even if they are new, right?)

Anyway, I've got a bunch of questions to ask, but this section probably isn't the place (pretty please, point me towards the right section?) So yeah, that's why I signed up here

Congratulations! I would recommend you book an appointment with the vets as should be done with all new birds. Yes you should clean and disinfect everything. Is your house bird proof? Are all your cookware stainless steel? If they're non stick pans THROW THEM OUT they give off toxic fumes such as teflon which will kill your bird. Also are all wires in tubes etc? I have so much more to say but I should stop. Welcome to the forum by the way!

Thank you =) Yes, I was thinking about that. I'll be trying to find a vet that treats birds and book an appointment within the week, as for the pans, yes they're non stick so I'll be using the oven to cook my food until I have the budget to replace them =P I didn't know about the tubes thought, thanks for the heads up! Maybe I can find some online and just supervise him closely until they arrive? Oh, do feel free to go on, this is the reason I signed up here. I read so many horror stories about baby birds dieing within the week of being bought that I'm really worried for the one I,ll be getting. I haven't even seen him yet, but just from the pictures I'm hooked. I saw him and knew he was the one I wanted.

Hello Kiryon, and welcome to the forum. :)

You must be so excited about your new baby cockatiel. Yes, wash everything thoroughly, then set up the cage, get the foods and water ready and then add your new baby.

Here is the cockatiel section if you have specific questions:
Budgies, Parakeets & Cockatiels - Parrot Forum - Parrot Owner's Community

Thank you =) I made a topic there to get the help I need.

Also, gonna upload a pic of him as soon as I get him X3 He's gorgeous, like really.

Kiryon - Welcome and congrats on your new baby! Can't wait to see pics!

Just got back home with my baby, the ride was quite a fright for him I think, he seems to be sleeping behind the cuttle bone xD

Is it normal that he keeps hiding a leg in his feathers and opening/closing his mouth on occasion? He also hissed a few times during the trip :(

Anyway, I tried to upload the pics, but I accidentally uploaded the 3 more than I wanted (an error message always displayed, I tought it failed) and it only show one of the as being all of them =S
