(In one week) - Abby, blue fronted amazon
I have owned a green cheek conure, but have fostered a cockatoo and a macaw. I will be adopting a blue fronted amazon named Abby. She is around 30 years old. She is hand shy, but she walks up on your arm with no problem. I live in a large 5 bedroom home with my cousin. We are trying to figure out where to put her, as she is not recommended around children. (She has a 7 and 11 year old.) Possibly in my office, because there's lots of sunlight and I would be able to spend time with her. (I am self employed.) She says a few words and hums and sings a little. But I don't care as much about how much she talks, just that she is happy and healthy. Any tips for a first time Amazon owner?

You have hit the Amazon jackpot here... I'm sure the experts will be along soon. Meanwhile, the SEARCH tab above is a great one!
Welcome, I'm so glad your bird is finding its way to you, and I'm glad YOU found US!

"You have hit the Amazon jackpot here..." So very well said!

The Amazon Forum have excellent advice and well worth the time to read!

The Amazon Forum starts with two excellent Threads, which are highlighted in light blue. The first one is a foundation in understanding Amazon Body Language. This is an excellent Thread to read a loud to your Amazon several times each day for a couple of weeks. Then at least one a month forever more! This is more for you to understand Amazon Body Language than for him! But it works for both of you!

The next Thread is I Love Amazons - ... This is a very large Thread that includes over thirty Segments on Loving and Living with Amazons, especially older Amazons!

Please see your Certified Avian Vet (CAV) in the very near future for a complete examination with additional attention to your Amazon's Heart and Air Sacks with a full blood screen.

Always remember: It is NEVER the fault of the Amazon! It is ALWAYS the fault of the Human! By placing and viewing all interaction from this vantage point, the Human can more quickly see what you are doing wrong and correct it!
