Getting a bird off Craigslist

Has anyone picked up a bird they found on craigslist? If so how did it go? I was looking through the site for a macaw and came across this person that wanted to trade their twelve year old cockatoo for a handfed baby I thought that was so sad. How could anyone just trade an animal like that.

That's awful! I hope no one was silly enough to give them a baby which will likely be "traded in" in a few years! :(

Yea unfortunately there are so many people out there that treat animals like nothing. People do not understand you cant just "get rid" of an animal they do not understand what is happening to them and it puts them through so much stress.

They probably couldn't socialize with the bird, most likely not friendly...so now they want a handfed baby instead which they're out of their mind thinking it would be a even trade....

I've taken birds from craigslist several times and its not always bad!

I've actually come close a couple of times with getting birds off of Craigslist and Kijiji... but in the end, things didn't work out that way. It's fine though, cause I'm happy with what I have now! :)

I've gotten birds from friends of the family, friends, friends' families, friends' friends, and a couple through forums, too. Oh, and strangers!

It really does irk me when I see posts of animals or items for trade for other items/animals. There's actually a local person trading his professional tattoo work for a sun conure, which seems reasonable... but some of the other ads? Ya, I wanna scream and shout!

I do Yorkie rescue and scan Craigslist. It is extremely sad, people selling their animals to best offer, rather then looking for a great home, and checking references and doing a home visit. It also makes my blood boil when I see up for trade ads. As for getting a bird off of Craigslist, I would from the get go consider it a rescue and treat it as such. Most rehomes have issus. With patience and love issues can be worked out. However, if you have any other birds in your home you will want to quarantine the new bird and of course a vet check with blood work would be needed.

Sounds like a cheap breeder or flipper... but as for stories, I got my first fid from CL and it's one of the best decisions I ever made! Honest people who didn't realize how much care a bird is and just needed to find her a fast home.
