Greetings!

Every day, Aizen gets the following:

1/4 tsp mixed seed.
3 tsp Harrison's pellets.
Breakfast bowl of mixed vegetables.

As my large bag of high potency is running out, I'm re-evaluating what I give him. Given that he loves all vegetables, do I really need pellets at all? That's the question.

While pellets undoubtedly contain a fair amount of carbs and protein, alternative foods can probably be used in their place. If I'm spending 10 minutes preparing his food each day, a little longer won't hurt.

Who among us has completely removed pellets from the diet, and doesn't just feed seed mix - what do you use?

Codie really does not like pellets at all! I still put them in his bowl even after 16 Months, but still he throws them out:(

Have you tried Tidymix? This has as much nutrition in it as pellets but does not contain any of the bad things that normal seed has in it! He also has lots of fruit and veg, pulses, corn etc.

I hadn't heard of them, but their web site shows some decent-looking products. He doesn't get a massive amount of pellets, it just seems a bit like eating a vitamin pill as well as a healthy diet. Perhaps it's time to start sprouting seeds, and working some pulses into the mix.

Yes it is a good mix.. If you go onto scarletts, they sell the whole range and are slightly cheaper.

The thing about pellets is they should have all the trace mineral/vitamins that would be hard to match with fresh foods. The variety of fresh would have to be huge to be complete. That and fresh spoils so quickly. variety is best so at least supplement with good quality pellets.

You're probably right, I guess I should get another bag when I run out, and just maintain a low level.

Pellets are not as widely available here in the Uk as much as they are in the USA. We can only buy them On-Line. Tidymix is much more widely used . I do buy the pellets, but as I said Codie just will not touch them:( I still put them in religiously everyday in the hopes that one day he will decide he likes them lol

my birds will not eat pellets either so when I make a batch of birdy bread I grind up a cup uf pellets in the food processor with a little water then add that to the bread mix and bake:D

You could have come up with a very good idea there Aliray :) I am going to grind some up tomorrow and mix it in with his food :)

I will let you know if this works.

try feeding them one at a time by hand, i use them for treats, right from their dish, LOL They think they're great that way, makes them special. Almost like allo-feeding.
