Cheeko- Sun Conure 7.5± Months Old
Hi guys and girls , I am new to the forum . Yesterday our family purchased a Sun Conure :orange: , he is very cute , His name is Cheeko and im guessing he is about 6 months old because the yellow feathers is only starting to come through on his wings. I would like some general advice on how to gain his trust and things like what are good toys for them , just general advice on keeping a Sun Conure , We know he is noisy and we prepared for that ( we Have also Heard Him) , We have researched them before buying but would like to hear some personal advice. His wing are clipped by the way.
Thank you

As far as trusting, let the bird set the pace. He may start trusting quickly or take awhile. Try sitting by his cage and talking or reading to him. Offer him little treats to so he learns that your hands are a good thing. Pretty soon his curiousity will get the best of him and he'll want to come and check out his new family.

As far as keeping them, their is no general advice except I think expect the unexpected. They always leave you guessing, lol. Learn to have a good sense of humor and laugh at the little things.

Thank You Jewels04 , By the way do perhaps have any advice on abit of nippyness? And what are some good treats that you recommend ? Thanks alot.

Yes Jewels04 has it right. Just give him time to settle in. They are very loving birds once they get to know you and trust you. They can be nippy. It is in the nature of the conures. My Sun knows that biting is a NO NO. I just tell her No in a stern voice. Now if she nips she does it much more gently. However, she does think it is a fun game. She will nip me gently and then say "NO" and shake her head no back and forth. Sun's are big clowns. You will have a blast with him. As far as a treat goes, mine will do anything for a small piece of a cracker (unsalted) or a piece of an apple (healthier choice). Good luck.

on the first day that I brought Sunny home, she was scared as hell (well I would be to, young, seperated from the flock, carried around in a small box and suddenly being somewhere new), so for the first day we just left her alone, just going around the room and talking, like we normally would, then slowly coming closer to the cage and just talking to her, the third day I could put my hand on the side of the cage without her freaking out and the fifth day she was sitting on my hand (still in the cage), taking treats and suddenly snuggling and cuddling in my hand :D now it's 3 months allready and she is the biggest clown ever, loves to sit on my shoulder, cuddle with everybody, crowl under my shirt and just let out the cutest noises :smile015: and I swear that she's hitting on my and hard :D I just can't emagine not having her around all the time any more...

as treats she lowes apples, grapes, and birdie cookies (sweet potato flavour)

Okay this may be silly but do we need cuttlebone in his cage? Forgot to ask earlier sorry . Thanks

I give our conure a mineral block she loves them! Didn't get her the cuttle bone though just the mineral block.
