Jimmy--Male Jenday Conure
I just got a Pineapple GCC 2 days ago, he's about 11 weeks old. I held him before I bought him from the breeder, and he was really sweet and didn't seem scared at all. When I got him home, I set his cage up and got him out, he squirmed a lot and got out of my hands, but I picked him back up, gently of course. He bit me pretty hard but didn't break the skin, so I just put him on my shirt and let him climb in the cage himself. If I put my hand in the cage slowly, he gets as far away as he can. He let me pet him barely this morning, but he turned his head like he was going to bite me. I understand he's scared because of the new environment, but is there anything I can do to help? Is this completely normal and will stop soon? I just wanna make him feel comfortable and let him know that he is safe. I've tried to feed him treats, but he won't eat them from my hand. Anything will help! Thanks!

Please have patiences with baby bird. You are a stranger to him. The bonding process where the bird builds up trust will take a while. Let him do what he needs to do and please do not put your hand in the cage. He needs to feel secure in the cage and view it as his home. There are articles on this forum and on the net on how to bond with your pet bird. Have fun with him and do not expect anything to happen quickly.

I'm sorry to hear your little one is so scared...it's frustrating, I know. Just goes to show that every birds personality is soo different. Our Franklin has never shown a shy bone in his body.

Like spiritbird said...give him some time without trying to get him out...talk to him LOTS and LOTS, sit next to his cage often, eat next to his cage, read him a book, draw a picture, knit or croche ;) My point is, let him get curious about YOU and he should settle down.

When he's coming to the side of the cage where you are sitting, offer him up a treat...Franklin our conure absolutely LOVES apples and grapes and banana chips, (but not fresh banana..go figure)

Once he's comfortable taking treats out of your hand through the cage bars, you can start putting your hand in the cage for him to come get a treat and go from there.

It could take a few weeks, but you'll get there.

Is he your first bird?

I've had parakeets before, a while back, but I was younger and really didn't know how to train them or anything. I've learned a lot more now because I've been looking stuff up.
He's finally letting me pet him. I've been spending a lot of time in my room just playing games and stuff beside his cage. I just wanna make sure he's tame, and I'm afraid that if I don't work with him, he'll start to get mean and want to bite a lot.
Thanks SO MUCH for the help! I was kinda worried!
And another thing, when he was younger, I'm not sure how old he was when this happened or how it happened, his wing got hurt and so he kinda carries it funny. The breeder said it wouldn't affect anything, but should I be really cautious about that?(You can kinda see how his wing sticks out if you look at my picture)

I would like to see you have an avain vet check out the wing. That way you will know exactly what is going on and if it is safe from him to fly. I have a GCC baby also and believe me he has no fear of anything.

I've been trying to find an avian vet around here. It's really difficult. I think I've found one vet, and it's an hour away, but I'm definitely going to get the wing checked out soon.
I just find it odd that the breeder did not know what happened to his wing... It makes me wonder how they really treat their babies.
