I just bought a new GCC about 2 days ago and im having problems with him. He is about 1 year old and he would be so sweet and followed commands like step up at the pet store. Now when i brought him home he runs around the cage so i wont pick him up and when i have the chance to pick him up he wont listen to step up. He also just get scared when i open the cage door and he runs to the back of the cage.
at the pet store he was at him with his flock.
Now he's been abducted and a big pink thing keeps trying to grab him, almost certainly to eat him. Sounds scary doesn't it?
Step1. NEVER grab them to make them go where you want.
Step2. If he's scared, back off. You'll only make him bite and scream if you keep pushing.
Step 3. Roll things back. Start over, sit next to him, don't look at him and just read a book, or better yet read some of the stickied posts on taming.
Step 4. SLOW! Go at his pace, not yours. He's easily got another 20 something years ahead of him, so a few weeks is nothing.
Get him to a point where he is happy with your hand on the cage and attempt to feed treats through the bars. Once he does it happily work on training to step-up using a stick (handy if others need him to step up) then when he's doing that on his own go to moving your finger close to the end of the stick. Always offer treats when they do good, always be consistent, always end training on a positive note and like others have said IT'S NEVER THE PARROT'S FAULT
