Hi I have been doing quite a bit of research on different birds. I have experince owning cockatiels in the past.. (currently my only pet is a Oscar Chilid) but cant seem to find a Tiel breeder and am not willing to go to a pet store where they cant tell me anything about the bird.. so I started looking into other types. First I looked for what (like the cockatiel) is considered a 'beginner bird' since I dont have much experince. Well I dont like Keets or Finches.. I looked at Doves for a little while but .. I am leaning more towards a GCC. I have at least 4 hours of playtime to devote to one on one interaction daily, I have 3 sets of toys and 2 sets of perches for the planned tiel.. I used to change the cage set up weekly with the tiels after a good scrub down of the entire cage. So the GCC wouldnt be bored and Id be (according to what I've heard/read) less likely to experince behavior issues with this routine already part of my bird handling routine.

From all the information I am getting (please correct me if I am wrong) it seems that a large cockatiel cage has the correct 1/2in or less bar spacing and room needed for the green cheek. they have the same dietary requirement )seeds and pellet mix and fresh fruits/veggies as treats).. the same perch size of 1 inch dia. wing clipping doesnt seem much different from clipping a cockatiel. but they seem more interactive in playtime so lol I actually may just drop the idea of another tiel all together to be quite honest.

One thing I cant find any information on them is .. I know with tiels females are more laid back and quiet Males tend to be nippy little mouths at sexual maturity. What about GCCs?

Hi! I'm not sure about difference in males vs females as a general but I will tell you about my two gcc. First off I LOVE their personalities. They are funny little birds. It's soooo true when they say they are a big bird in a little body! I have had a female and now currently have a male. My female was lost in a tragic dog accident when she was being looked after my my mom, but that's another story. So onto the differences, now I have NO clue if any of this has to do with sex or just different personalities. My female I got hand raised from a breeder when she was weened. She was cute and friendly from the beginning but very quickly became "my" bird. She would nip and bite anyone else who tried to hold her including my husband and son. If she would go to anyone other than me she would always try to get back to me. She would always get off her cage and try to find me by walking around (this is ultimately what led to her accident) she was a very tidy bird, pretty much only poop in a couple places in her cage, didnt really play with toys, didnt make birdy soup in her water dish, traveled very well, and was pretty noisy, didnt really play like you hear how gcc's play.
Now onto the male. We adopted and he lived in a too small of cage, was on a seed only diet, lived in a darkish room with the cat litter box, he came home to us went right into his huge cage, loves everyone, lets everyone hold him, talks up a storm with things we've taught him (in his gravely birdy voice of course) plays on his back, wrestles with your fingers, chews on everything, makes a huge mess everywhere, makes a lovely birdy soup in his water dish for me multiple times a day, only really gets loud when he thinks he's being ignored, has some food aggression issues, but overall is an awesome bird!
I didn't think I would love another bird more than my little Rio but this one (Sunshine) is textbook what you read about gcc and their huge personalities.
Like I said I have NO clue if any of this has to do with one being female or one being male but there is a HUGE difference between my two. Also just so you know I didn't know what sex either was until after I got them and sent in feathers for DNA testing. Rio was being called a him until DNA said nope and sunshine wa being called a her until DNA also said nope! LoL
Best of luck, and either way male or female I don't think you can go wrong with these cute little guys!!
