Fruit Flies.... ARGH!

Ok, at some point in the past week my house was invaded by fruit flies.

Now, I know the best way to get rid of them is to remove their food source and they should die off in 10 days or so... Here's the problem: Parrot food dish.

I work second shift, 4pm-12:30am. When I leave I give Baby her dinner in a separate bowl and it stays out until I get back from work, or sometimes until the next morning (bad parront, no nut!). She eats most of it, but there's always some soft food, fruit or veggies left to draw the flies... They also seem to be attracted to the pellets I leave out for her

so does anyone have any tips/ideas to get rid of the annoying little buggers without starving my poor bird?

You can buy fruit fly traps, if you have one of those DIY pest control stores you might try finding them there, don't know who else may carry them, or you can make your own, take a jar and place some fruit in the bottom, then fasion a small cone shaped funnel out of paper with the hole in the end of the cone just large enough to allow a fly to enter, place the cone in the jar with cone part facing down, the flies will be able to enter but most will not find their way out, it won't eliminate them totally but it might cut their numbers down some.

Thanks Oom Bobby, that is a brilliant idea and I am sure it will work with all flies. You can also buy those sticky strips that you hang from the ceiling or make your own. Rub some fruit on it and the flies get stuck.

I second Bobby's statement.

I found out about these wonderful poison-free traps recently, so that it won't be quite as dangerous should a child or parrot get a hold of it. They're called 'Victor poison-free insect magnets'. I absolutely LOVE them. I had a serious cricket infestation, and after setting out these traps at night; I wake up to a trap that's overflowing with crickets. Kind of gross... but it works beautifully!
