Freaking out here...

Sorry to ruin the mood, but I'm really freaking out. Sunshine, my cockatiel, just hit something again. I got up, and there was a loud noise in the other room. He was on my shoulder, and flew off when he heard the noise. Unfortunately, the door to the room was open (I learned a very valuable lesson here), and that room just happened to have the blinds pulled up. Sure enough, he hits the window. It was hard enough for him to feel a bit dizzy for a moment, so his flight swerved and he clumsily landed on the ground. I picked him up, and his beak was open and breathing hard because of his exhaustion. Luckily, there is no visible bleeding, and he stopped breathing hard within a matter of minutes.

His feet became warm, and he seems overjoyed to be getting some extra attention. He's taking a nice nap right now, and I'm hoping that helps him to feel better.

Why am I freaking out? Because I worry about possible blood I can't see. He has hit things several times, opaque or not, because of his flight accidents. Is a trip to the vet coming sooner than I think?

Why are you freaking out? Because you're a Mom who's baby was just hurt, who could blame you! Russell used to do that when I first brought him home so I would take him over to the window so he could feel the glass hoping this would make him understand he couldn't fly through it. Did it work, not so much! He banged into it pretty hard and luckily it was the day before his vet visit so we could go over this. I put up shears on the bay window and stopped flying into it.

I hope you figure something out soon, I know how nerve racking it can be when it happens.

Thank you, I appreciate your response. It's so nice to have a forum full of other people who pamper their birdies like I do, I love being able to relate with you all.

He woke up from his catnap already, and is acting as though nothing ever happened. That makes me feel much better.

Now... pinpointing why he's so skittish... That's a whole other thread for another time.

It's just an idea but when I have had flighted birds in thr house I make bird play nets for all the windows or just a branch or 2 on smaller windows that aren't opened much
if you make the nets attach to the curtain rail etc then they can just be pulled back out of way when not in use
this allows the bird somewhere to land if they do fly toward the window and are less likely to make actual contact with it

I can imagine your worry!

The suggestion by PR is great. Luckily, Cal seems to be great at avoiding hitting things but I would be just as upset as you if she did.

I can relate to the "skittishness" as the only time Cal ever freaks out are explosions etc on TV lol. She soon recovers and I try to anticipate them happening and press "mute" when I can haha!

Hows that for pampered fid and daft as a brush parronting?! All in the same boat here and I think the non fid owners would be glad about that haha!

Oh dear, I remember that awful feeling, checking them over to check every inch of them to make sure they are okay. I hope Sunshine is feeling better Little Sunshine needs to learn that those windows hurt. They can be taught to avoid them, Buddy and Eddie have managed to learn (against all odds with me as their teacher lol) where all the windows are. Even if I am standing behind one, calling them over, they still know they can't get to me. I suggest doing what WB mentioned and taking them to the window and letting them touch it. Over time (and hopefully no crashes) they will learn that the glass is there.
