So, I've been taking lots of pictures of our newest addition Flare, and I noticed his feathers are frayed on his back.
His tail is perfect, but I am wondering what the cause of this is??

If it's nutritional, it should be fixed since he's here, his previous owner fed him absolute crap.

what are the other possibilities, he's acting very normal, poop is good, everything seems fine.

You mean the little black marks?

Probably just feather bronzing from wear and tear. I'm sure he'll look better once he goes through a molt!

Jayde, my new girl, has them as well, but the new feathers she's molting in are looking nicer than the old ones are!

I bet it is more likely from wear. Once you get him on some good food, and new feathers molt in he'll look amazing and stay amazing :D
