We have officially become foster parents to two birdies from A Helping Wing. This is the first time they have trusted someone to foster and work with some of their birds. These two are up for adoption but since they have been a pair and are a little flighty no one has shown true interest in them. So we have separated them since they are not a bonded pair and they will be adopted out separately since we think it will be easier to find adopters for them that way.

Our first foster bird is Jalapeno, an amazon, who I think my parents renamed him Palo since they didn't like the name. He has been doing really well already since they just came home last night. He is already accepting head scratches when before he would think you were about to strangle him:rolleyes:

The second foster is Sweetpea. She is a red belly poi. Super skittish and unsure about the people around her. People have shown interest in her until they see the behavior and then don't really care for her. So we are working with her to be more comfortable and less scared of people! She isn't mean just a flighty bird.

I have videos but they are taking forever to upload right now so later:D

Beautiful White Fronted Amazon! The little Red Bellied girl is SO cute! I know with some love and patience you guys can get her so people will like her more. How sad!

I think pois are just naturally more shy. I think with time with y'all she'll come right out of her shell.

I think she will come right out too! She steps up pretty well but just a little flighty. I'm perfectly happy to be working with these two they should be pretty easy. Should see some of the conure pairs they have that need lots of work! Talk about not being friendly:eek:

Victoria, both birds are beautiful, with your help and TLC it shouldn't be very long before they are ready to find the homes they so deserve. Thanks for sharing their stories. Please let us know how it turns out for them.

Wow. You guys sure get a lot of attractive and unusual zons up for adoption in your part of the country. When we were looking for Kiwi, we had to wait a loooong time for any zon to come up, and he's just your "garden variety" blue front (though his personality is certainly....unique:D). I still remember the DYH who was a possible tres marie (was his name Rosie?), now you have your beautiful Kelly and now this handsome guy? He is stunning. Can't see what is wrong with the name Jalapeño though. Cute and original (and who knows, maybe the lady zons find him hot;))

I bet Sweetpea will blossom too and find a wonderful forever home. Your family seems to have a lot of experience working with birds, and obviously care a great deal about them, so no doubts he will come out of his shell. Let us know how both of these fosters turn out!

Really :11:? That's surprising. I thought many species of zons were around just about everywhere in the US. Weren't you in AZ at the time? I see quite a few different zon species on a regular basis out here, and you're on the west coast too.

Its too bad people are judging how they think birds are from visiting them at the shelter. They are totally different when you bring them home [to a new environment]. Pearl [my Goffins ] a good example. When I went to see him he would try to fly and attack me [I saw him 3 times] . The women was desperate and begged me to take him . At home he stepped out of his carrier and was my bird ever since . I have 20 birds half have been rehomes . A lot have had behaviors their owners didn't want [and they have been fine here. I think if your really into birds, bringing them into a new environment can change their ways positively .

The place we worked with a really really small organization because the bigger and "more well known" rescues would not even talk to us since we were under 21(apparently 21, not 18 is the normal age minimum to adopt a bird at most places). Even the other places who wouldn't adopt to us had very few zons, just lots of macaws, toos, and conures with a few other species mixed in here and there. Then again, as the only bird I've ever adopted, I never thought about if that was normal or not. Maybe the universe was just trying really hard to make sure Kiwi ended up with us.... or maybe A Helping Wing is simply a bigger rescue than we had in AZ, therefore more zons go through (?)

They're both beautiful! I can't believe anyone would pass on the opportunity to adopt Sweetpea just because she's a little shy. I would take her home in a heartbeat! I'm sure she'll be a very friendly and confident birdie soon enough. Both of them are in good hands. :)

Most of the amazons at the rescue are not easily adoptable because of their personalities or they are attached to what we call the amazon gang. They are actually putting together an aviary for the amazons that are considered institutionalized because they like each other more then people. They try to keep the new amazons away from the gang so they don't get attached to the amazon gang. Should hear the amazon show though nice and loud and hilarious:) They have Rosie and Sweetie Monster who they show pretty much all adopters in the hope they will pick someone but so far they don't show interest in people just their gang.

The age for adopters is 18 at A Helping Wing. Jeanne would have been very happy if you walked in growing up with birds and didn't have a problem with adopting a more problematic bird. The problem they have found is that they have trouble finding adopters who are okay with behavioral problems. Most people want a nice bird who doesn't really bite or need much work. We don't have too many of those right now which is why she wants us to work with the smaller birds while they focus on the big guys. She's hoping to get most of her smaller birds adopted out by having us work with them in a home setting. The real problem is that she has a lot of pair bonded conures who are going to be a real blast to work with....

It is a fairly big rescue around 200 birds if you count the small finches, budgies, and cockatiels. She has the building we call the rescue and then the house. Both have lots of birds in them. Jeanne keeps even the most problematic in the hopes that they pick someone one day like Folger. Though she does send some to sanctuaries if she feels they have that I love other birds and no people ever thing going on:)

Maybe the universe was just trying really hard to make sure Kiwi ended up with us....

I believe people always end up meeting certain other people (or birds:)) for a reason. That particular being, "Kiwi" in your case, was "meant" to come into your life, and now you can definitely see that!

It could sometimes be free will and random decision to get whatever bird one sees at the time, but much of the time I think it's probably destined. :)

200 birds is A LOT. That's a really big organization. The organization we worked with only had 15-20 birds at a time, if that. It was really small, and even they had a 21+ rule, but made a exception because I had grown up with birds:) The bigger place (I think they had 50/60 birds, mainly very large ones) who wouldn't consider us I don't think exists anymore because they made it SO difficult to adopt a bird no one could pass their ridiculous screening process. I think it's nice A Helping Wing really looks for owners the birds choose. However, aiding and abetting a renegade gang of amazons...:eek::eek:

As for Kiwi, he may not be a cuddle monster, but I don't think we could have found a better match:p

Jeanne said her goal is to stay around 100 once she gets her numbers down but then you have a waiting list that is very long! So for every one she adopts out there are many more waiting for the rescue to take them in.

The amazons really are renegades:D They are super hilarious though when they start singing show tunes and arguing back and forth with each other. I think the gang has 5 in it if I am remembering everyone:) It hasn't grown since we have been volunteering. The other amazons are out in the shelter while the gang is in the house. I have a feeling we might get Sweetie Monster as a foster eventually in the hopes being away from the gang makes her more social with people.

I definitely think Kiwi was meant for you guys:D Definitely living like a King!

Riddick07, any videos of amazons singing show tunes?

I have not gotten those videos but I can get some if they are going on next time I am there:D Possible cursing from at least one though....lets just say they know some real colorful language!

Soooooo update on the fosters....Jalapeno has an adopter right now just have to finish up the visits and paperwork but he responds to her incredibly well:) She handles his growly bluffing very well too!

The red belly is doing much better. Still skittish a bit but is much less likely to run off in fright now. He is also allowing touching a bit on the beak and head from me. Seems to think my mother will eat him but is pretty calm with me. He has one potential adopter coming to see him next week possibly so hopefully that goes well!

Once the red belly is adopted out and I get the big 40 by 30 stacker I want my old stacker will be empty for fosters.... So the next ones that would be me primarily working with the birds and caged in my room are going to be a bonded conure pair and a very aggressive pionus... Apparently I like a challenge:32: The bonded pair were once friendly with people so hopefully they can remember that from watching me interacting with my bonded pair of conures. The pionus will be the real challenge I am guessing...I was told to stock up on bandages if I want to work with him:rolleyes: Figured it can't be worse then when Folger laid me open at the rescue...maybe...need more Angry Bird bandages most likely... There is something about him though that says he is adoptable after some work! Could be wrong but hopefully not:)

Oh and if anyone remembers Corey the cute little goffin cockatoo from when my mother was posting adoptable birds....he is here at our home getting his adoption finalized:D His new owner is very excited and has already purchased a cage, furnished it with toys, and has a gym being built.... he is going to be a spoiled boy!

Wow, what a gorgeous amazon.

I love Sweetpea! I debated between a female Red Bellied and Ruppell's, but I do think Red Bellied girls are gorgeous.

I hope that they both find loving homes. Thank you for taking them in!

Wow they are beautiful! What a great thing you are doing! I wouldn't be able to do that...I would want to keep all the fosters..lol.:30:

Kiwibird...I always have said everything happens for a reason...Kiwi was DEFINITELY suppose to have you! You have given him an amazing life that he has deserved and waited so long for!

Kudos to you both!

Okay so Jalapenos adoption fell through but she adopted a very old green cheek conure which in the end was a much better match for her! The green cheek was a new addition and he was just days away from starving to death but after a week with his new owner and his head in a food bowl he has gained a lot of weight and has the conure attitude going on:D He barely moved before but is now being a confident little stinker that is climbing around and even giving little hops from place to place. He is totally in love with his new person.

Jalapeno and Sweetpea went back to the shelter last night. There are many people interested in Jalapeno so hopefully he connects with one of the many asking about him! Sweetpea is also generating some interest and while he had one visitor while with us they were too active for him. He handled their high energy very well and I was very proud of him but they were definitely not the home for him!

The new fosters! My mother was given 4 parrolets to work with....mother, father, and two babies. They are very cute and the father is very sweet the other three will need some work.

And my new foster the one I asked for Skyler!

And Corey with his new owner at our house she took him home after that visit! We went to see how he was doing in his new home yesterday and he is a very happy boy! In the background of the second one you can see Monster drop down to go after poor Loki on the stand:rolleyes:
