For the ekkie who hates showers and water in general?

Hello,

When I first bought Yoshi I was a little bit lax in providing him water. Mainly because he never touched it and seemed to get all his water needs from the fruit and veggies so after a while I would go a few days without putting out a water bowl.

These days I leave a large water bowl high up in his cage all day in the hope that one day he will decide he wants to shower himself(or even drink it lol) but to no avail.

To shower him i basically have to force him into a tub of water and give him a good soaking. Feel bad forcing him but otherwise he will not shower.

Has anyone had this problem? Any suggested solutions?

My galah didn't seem too keen on getting wet when I first got her. I have a shower over bath and I just put her in the bath. At first, she'd stay up the end. In her own time, she decided that getting wet was ok. Is there a way you could make bathtime more fun for Yoshi? A misting, then a treat, maybe?

I would try misting! You might have to play around with the settings though. My Parakeets tend to only shower when you have the actual "spray" on and it's being shot above them so only a few drops go on them.

How long have you been putting the water bowl in his cage? If it's only been a few days then you have nothing to worry about. Eventually he'll find out that he can drink and or bathe in there. What about putting a (water/bird) safe toy inside so he would have to reach into the bowl?

Yeh its only been about a week. What i do is i chuck an almond in there. He takes a look at it and waits a couple of minutes and slowly makes his way in the water haha. But yeh otherwise has no interest in his water bowl.

I used to try to sprinkle water on him but he would run for the hills. But I will definitely try your idea of more of a mist and maybe invest in a shower perch.

I know I must sound like a broken record to the folks that have heard me say this a million times but...I think it is imperative for eclectus to have frequent baths whether they like them or not. Actually when I have had ones who hated it or were afraid I gave them DAILY mistings, lightly while talking sweetly and reassuring them. After a few weeks of daily mists they understand that it isn't going to kill them and actually begin to like it.

Also please don't ever assume that the water content in their fruits and veggies is enough,they really need access to fresh drinking water daily whether you think they are using it or not they need it there.

Whenever I want my Ekkie to have a bath, I just run the battery powered "broom". Story is that the sound is somewhat like rainfall which encourages bathing in birds. Not sure how much truth there is to the theory, but it works almost everytime.

My bird (albeit a quaker) used to scream something awful and try to fly away when my wife tried to mist her. I started shooting the mist straight up so it just sort of landed on her (and me, but hell I need to bathe to). We moved up to leaving her on the perch in the back of the shower and giving her the odd spray which she doesn't protest too much. We'll get there.

Jasper HATED being misted and I couldn't get him to go into the bathtub. Solution? Shower perch. It was like instant birdie heaven. He puts his face into the stream, closes his eyes and just loves it

I take Oliver in the shower with me and make a big "event" out of it. We sing and talk and play. He loves it. At first he was a bit afraid but now he can't wait. He will lift his wings and turn every which way to make sure he doesn't miss a spot. It's quite amusing I must say....

I just put Bixby and Maya into their respective travel cages and put them into the shower. I set the shower head for its lowest setting and then let it rain on them until they're good and soaked.

Maya enjoys this. Bixby... tolerates it.





I've been thinking of getting a shower perch, but I hear they often fall out. Anyone experience this? Or the opposite?

My shower perch has never fallen. I wet the suction cups, stick them to the wall and press really hard. I'll push down on the perch a few times to make sure it's secure.

I used PVC and made a "free" standing shower perch. The bottom frame fits in the bottom of the tub and then "T" perch on top and no worries about it falling off the wall. I can move it from room to room to use for training or anything else I want also. Cost about $10.00 and less than 30 minutes to make.

This is the great shower perch my hubby made for the fids. He roughed up the pvc so it is easier for them to grip. It comes out when I want to take a shower alone and it never falls!

I will let the hubby know you appreciated his design. He is pretty amazing! I will explain an issue I am having with painting or the birds. He disappears down in the basement and wallah a few hours later he comes back up with some amazing solution to my problem.
