So, I got this rescue conure, a nanday. he was living in a small cage with a cockateil with tiny diameter perches. He has a wide stance. and he will not grip onto a finger or object unless i physically close his feet. Why? what can i do to help him?

Take him to a vet. We could speculate, but only a vet could say why.

Poor thing, definitely take him to a vet.

When I got Rosie her feet where very weak, if I held her on my hand and moved around she would fall off. She had to hold onto my shirt with her beak to keep herself on and this was in august. I did some exercises with her everyday and it took around 6 months for her to get her full foot strength back, although she still isn't as sure footed as other parrots because she has leg that wasn't set properly after a break.

Here's the main steps I used, your vet should tell you different exercises you can do for your bird.

Tilting my hand up and down, later adding a circular motion
- This got all her joints moving and she had to balance and hold on with her feet. At the beginning it was very small and slow movements.

Walking - Everyday I let her walk on the floor at least once to work those walking muscles.

Stepping up exercises - Asking her to step up repeatedly for a latter effect. I did this step every few days and only for 2 or 3 minutes.

Holding her
- You wouldn’t think this would be an exercise but it absolutely is. I walked around with her so much and the whole time she was exercising her legs and feet. The first few months she needed to hold onto my shirt with her beak or she would loose balance and fall off and now she never needs to hold on anymore.
