I have been wondering about foods for parrots. Except for the general pellets and bird seed cooking mixes, what other foods are okay/good to feed parrots? I do have a lot of parrot related food available for my bird, but when im eating human food he always wants some. And all of us owners know you just want to give a little bite just this once, but get pulled back to reality because you dont want to harm or even make your bird sick.

Im just curious, know about recipes for birds, but can you give a bite of something else? Ive read from my breeders guide that marie biscuits are OK. And what about rooibos tea?(without sugar and milk) If any one can help that would be great, websites will also be welcome for any info on good food for parrots.

Thanx,
Wilma.

Hi Wilma, I don't have a lot of time right now to post much but I will get back to you later on this afternoon. Have to pop out about 5 mins ago  so running very late. I'll be back soon with some of the foods that Bucc eats.

Hi again Wilma, well as promised here's some of the things that Bucc will eat,

Rice and pasta (always cooked) Chicken leg, bone and all :D toast, peanut butter (small amounts) eggs with the shell crushed into it. Vegetables fruit, (he's not a great lover of fruit but loves pomegranite) squashes, small bit of cheese (not daily) practically anything that we eat he will have a little of. I never give him tea or coffee, but he will have a small drink of orange juice when I have my coffee ( that way he thinks he's having coffee) I keep him off the sugary things makes him too hyper.

Here is some websites with good info on food stuffs.

Hope these help.

Hi mate. Variety is the spice of life. Alcohol is a no go and Avacado will kill all parrots. Most other fruits are ok. Leafy green vegies are good for vitamin A.For your eckie nuts like peanuts and almonds will be taken with love and try sweet potato, may be a go. Good luck ok

Makes me kinda hungry... :D

Hello, I cant really help you because i have a parakeet. I feed her regular seeds, oats and groats, and seed trees. For treats i put various fruits and vegies which she likes.

Sarah,

You'd be surprised what she will eat, my parakeets will also have toast, crushed egg well practically anything that Bucc has, No chicken bones tho' lol. They do love their toast with a little peanut butter on it in the mornings.

I cut mine up quite small for them but they love it. Let us know what she thinks of it. She may not take it straight away but once she gets to know how yummy it is there'll be no stopping her. :D

I gave some to Lilly, at first she was afraid of it :O, then she LOOOOOVED it !

:jumping40 Thats great news, I have to do Bucc some every morning, and I'm in trouble if I'm running late and he doesn't get his toast. Boy do I know about it then.

I read that onions and parsely are also no nos.

Well the budgie eats:
manderin, apple, toast, breakfast muffins, fruit bars, rice, weetbix with warm water (her favouite).....
And the other normal bird stuff.
Once, and only once, shes had coke. When she was a baby I popped out to answer my phone and she was sitting there, on my cup, with a little brown bit on her feathers. I learned my lesson, I promise. She is NEVER left unattended with anything other than water now :)

:D :D they are so darn quick, I guess its good that we all learn from our mistakes, I know I have. Trouble is they seem to find more of our mistakes than we realise we are making. :D

I feed the lovies and my budgie the same things. If one will eat it, they all will at least try it.

Normally they have pellets, and for treats small amounts of seeds hidden under their pellets. But now, I have figured out a bird bread recipe they actually love (I posted it under recipes). Now they wil have that too and I will get them eatting the fresh stuff that goes into the bread. Oh and they always have loved leaves. Lettuce, herbs, and now broccoli leaves (who'd have guessed).

Can I come for breakfast at your house. :D

I find Rox likes anything that is stolen...... So we trick her working so far:D

I don't know if this was said (it's 2 am and I dont have enough caffine in me to read this whole thread) but all of my birds LOVE sprouts. You can probably find them at a local health food store, and bird stores actually sell a certain mix just for birds. You will need a sprout jar as well too. Don't sprout them for 3-5 days as directed-they are the most healthy when the sprout is almost microscopic.
