... I did grocery shopping yesterday..I'm notoriously bad at it so I wait til old mothers cubboard is close to being bare  $265.00 later I'm out the door but that should last a month or so.
So of course the kids are top priority when shopping.
Now because it's only the three of us, I buy stuff specifically for them, but some things I don't eat,so I try to get the smallest quantity possible.
I got them a bag of broc and cauliflower heads with carrots..a small container of "salsa" mix...chopped peppers and tomatoes..a small eggplant..cuke..then there was blue/black berries..small container watermelon..a bunch of 'nanna's , 5 corn on cobs..a green pepper..peas in pods..all locally grown FRESH stuff.
etc etc etc...the list goes on..I bet I spent $50 on just THEIR stuff

Now comes my problem..I know they wont eat all this stuff before its not "fresh" any more.
What do I do?? Make a chop? Can the berries/mellon/grapes be frozen in the chop? What about the corn on cob??

Hi Jim, wow what a lot of shopping LOL.

Prepare and freeze your fruit separate to the veggies.

Egg Plant is going to make it mushy and not sure if it is Ok for the fids or not as it appears on the Ok and not Ok list here? Good for you though! (and you thought Hurricane season had finished LOL)

Non-toxic for birds list and a list of things that are toxic for birds.

Tomatoes - I dont feed them to Plum, if you do go easy. Corn - cook and freeze separately in bags and then you can grab some for yourself and give the fids a little on the top of their chop some days.

Don't forget to wash everything that is fresh. Happy chopping!

Thanks for the response K :) Me,living in New England on the east coast, missed what happened in Florida and the Carribian thank God! However,Hurricane Jose' is on the move as a cat five and has a big potiental of coming up here..it is still about a week away...only time will tell.

As far as corn goes..Amy likes it. I was getting already cooked mini cobs, boiling to just warm them up,then cut a chunk off coz she like chewing on the cob too..and I'd scrape the nibs off the rest of the cob and add to her and Beebs nummy bowl..Beebers seems to be eating more and more "good" things now :D and his pellets! This morning all I found was pellet dust in his tidy bowl where as before he didn't even touch them..maybe he finally realized he better eat them or go hungry lol.

Now as far as the fresh stuff goes..freeze the berries and melon and grapes separate from the main chop?
With the peas in pods...should I just snap the pods in a few pieces instead of "processing" them?
Chop the green pepper...mix in the already chopped salsa veggies ( carefully looking for,and removing any ONION)?
No eggplant??
Chop and mix cuke and radish?

Yesterday, I made this great looking nummy bowl for Amy..all super fresh stuff mentioned earlier..added some sweet tater..I was proud of myself.
She ran to her bowl ( as she normally does) and looked inside..then looked at me..then back in the bowl...once more at me..then turned around and headed right back to her lazy perch!
What a slap in the face! Ingrate that she is!!

Hi Jim

Pea in pods - if the pods are going to be stringy which wouldnt be good for the fids just do the peas. I'd just do peas btw! If you mean Mange Tout or Sugar Snap peas then they are all OK as is.

Cucumber is very watery and will make chop into slop. Radishes are good to go chopped or grated.

Jim be very selective with the salsa it is better to chuck that one thing than it spoil the whole batch ok?

Jim, some folks are of the opinion certain frozen vegetables are just as good or better than fresh. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and edamame (soy) can be thawed and retain nutrition if not boiled to death in water. Bananas and berries of all sorts will freeze well provided you pack them in a sturdy bag and squeeze out as much air as possible. (reduced ice crystals)

I don't feed a lot of corn, but my flock prefers it on the cob rather than the niblets. Cut into wheels and/or cut each wheel into quarters, like a piece of pie!

I know my bird can only eat a few grams or maybe an ounce or teaspoon or whatever at one sitting and it's only him, so I just buy what I like; apples, oranges, strawberries, black berries, boiled eggs, sweet peppers, etc. And let him piece meal what i'm eating. Then it's more of a flock feast. He generally prefers what I eat to anything else so I just make pick something healthy and munch down with him. Saves a lot in the grocery department if we eat the same treats and he only eats part of one berry because it fills him up. Also you don't want to leave fresh fruit out all day anyways, it's better just eating together as a flock and polishing off anything that can spoil.

My biggest problem is my work schedule..for time. BB just LOVES eating with me. He generally won't eat the good stuff if I put it in his house. On my days off and I do have the time to sit down and have lunch or dinner with him,he loves helping himself to what is on my plate.
As I mentioned once or twice before,Amy is a big chow-hound (aren't all Amazon's??) and can and will sit at her nummy bowl for 5 or 10 minutes noshing away, but Beebs is like your GC..he just picks at this and that. Once or twice he really sat down and dug into mac and cheese or Ramen noodles *(without the flavor packet of course)
I just love how the little guy makes chirps while he eats..like he is reakky enjoying himself lol

I make a rather large amount of chop at once and freeze it. I add oatmeal to keep it from getting soggy once it's been frozen. I chop of the veggies kinda small because my birds are weird, but you can chop them up larger if that works for you.
