Umbriel (Umbri)- Fischer's/Blackmask Lovebird Ć¢ā‚¬Ā¢

As some of you know, my previous lovebird Obie unexpectedly passed away while I was on vacation. The position in which he died suggested a stroke, and I wouldn't doubt it. I have never seen another lovie with the colours he had, and I think inbreeding was to blame.

I didn't want to be without a bird, so I had been in contact with a breeder who had babies ready at the end of this month. I went to pick one out yesterday, and since they are so close to being weaned, she offered to send one home with me with a bit of formula. So I agreed.

He's about 10 weeks old and his name is Umbriel, corresponding to my astronomical theme (Oberon and Umbriel are moons orbiting the same planet) and he's an accidental fischer's/blackmask cross. He's only 10 weeks old and he's the complete opposite of Obie. He also bites wayyyy harder than Obie, which maybe was an indication of Obie's health. This new little guy doesn't hold back, lol.

I'm going to give him a few more days before I start properly working with him. He apparently eats formula off a spoon, but hasn't been touching my offers and is eating other, solid foods, so I'm not too concerned. He never stops moving and I have a feeling he'll take longer to get comfortable with me. It's a bit disheartening having to start over, and I still miss Obie, but I'm hoping this little guy can fill the hole in my heart Obie left behind.

Iā€™ve gotten myself in deeper than expected with this little one.

I had moved him to the smaller cage a few days ago. All was well. He even came out by himself today but I had to towel him to get him back in. Today I came home to find him escaped and inside the millet bag. He made a huge mess. :25: iā€™ve moved him to the prevue cage for now that I KNOW is inescapable and he has much more room.

He will take millet from my hands, but is scared of them otherwise. I canā€™t towel him and train him in a different room like I did with Obie because he wants nothing to do with my hands. Iā€™m working on offering millet on an open palm to desensitize him... if anyone has any tips please let me know. Iā€™m on an adventure with this one and I donā€™t quite know where Iā€™m going.
