So my stepfather came with us today to see Folger....and all 3 of us came back with bites and bandaids:rolleyes: I did tell my stepfather Folger was going to bite him if he came any closer and he handed him a toy and he jumped and nailed him on the hand. I mean really nailed him and his reaction was to fling his hand and honestly can't blame him because he got the worst bite of the day! Checked over Folger first to make sure he was alright and then asked my stepfather if he was alright:54: Folger is very possessive of me and doesn't like when others get close. He nailed my mother for the same reason. Any suggestions on socializing him with other people? I know some suggest for me to ignore him but not sure this will work for him since all of his other issues.

ANYWAY:D He loved all the toys he could create a mess with by destroying. He ignored the straw toy and the foam one. I ordered something like 35 bamboo/willow baskets the other day so I will have a bunch of those for him to rummage through and destroy by the time he gets home.

Lots of Videos!

This was the best video of the day! The only thing we didn't get was his demon child laugh...

Hope you enjoyed the videos and his crazy hyperactiveness;)

Any suggestions about socializing him with others would be great! We think he will be alright as long as I'm not around when someone else takes him out but he fluffs up and gets ready to nail people even if they are only walking by me. When I went to the macaw room to see a cage that I was thinking about for him (way too big by the way...) he literally was leaning at the edge of the table trying to follow me and when I came back my mother was running around trying to catch him. I leaned down and he stepped right up:) While it feels great to be chosen I still want him to be semi hand able by others. They don't need to do everything with him but if I was to leave for a couple days or in an emergency he has to be nice with others. I know training and time but any suggestions would be great:D

Oh my gosh, those videos brought tears to my eyes. What you are doing for Folger is amazing, and that poor boy is so luck to have you:) He deserves some good luck!
I don't have a 'too, so really don't have any advice, but I wanted to thank you for what you are doing for him. He is so cute the way he dances and it looks like he is playing peek a boo:)

When do you bring him home?

Too owners and especially rescue too owners are angels in my eyes. It's a huge responsibility. Bless you! Folgers is quite the character and lucky to have you.

Too cute! Quite a character he is! My Jasper is so mellow still. I'm waiting to see a a cockatoo personality still. So glad you guys are bonding so well and I hope he learns to be comfortable with others. I'm working on my guy with that also.

Thanks guys! My mother was asking if I was really sure I wanted to bring him home because of the huge responsibility (no more Europe trips for me! At least for awhile! I still want to do road trips in the US just figured I'd have a birdie passenger.) but I feel ready and while it will take a long time I think he is going to be an amazing bird. I will just have to push through the crazy ride for awhile!

He should be able to come home within two weeks. This weekend I am going to Maryland for my uncles birthday so don't want to bring him home this week...

I actually want to create a first aid kit specifically for him and his issues. This trip he had chewed on his shoulder pretty badly and want to make sure I have everything I could possible need incase he does serious damage. So suggestions for what to add would be nice. I'm going to ask my vet for suggestions too but wanted to know what others keep around for their fids.

Mangie, not sure your guy will ever have this hyperactive nut job attitude! I actually think part of it is because he is nervous and unsure about our reactions. Ivory has just started acting like a normal cockatoo and its nothing like Folger. Folger will work himself up to the point he starts biting randomly but Ivory will scream at her toy like they just insulted her. Plus, she gets into EVERYTHING! Folger only took what you gave him and stuck to me like glue.

I'm guessing your guy will get comfortable soon and take to stealing the lobster when your backs turned like Ivory....Or landing on your ipad and you going crazy because its brand new and has no screen protector... Took Ivory awhile to feel comfortable enough in her surroundings to cause destruction.

He is SOOOO cute ! i love his personality ! Sophie when she was little "picked me" as her fav person in the world and even tho i still am she will go to other people. Everytime some came to the house and i would set up visits lol .... I would make my friends come over. Meet them outside and hand them a heavy sweater in the summer time mind you, and say ok you go in first and talk to her and i want you to pick her up after 5 mins. Have the sweater over your hand and tell her to step up, and keep doing it till she does, and then just talk to her for a min or two and i will come in. We did that for months, she is now 1 1/2 maybe a tad older and i can take her to pet stores and she will jump person to person giving kisses.

this might not work for Folger but thats how i did it with sophie. I hope this helps alittle. Your baby is CUTE.

What an adorable little clown Folger is. I love the bare eyed toos. Thank you for the commitment you are about to take on to change this little guys life.

I keep Quickstop handy for my plucker. Cornstarch or flour will work to stop bleeding too. I also use 100% aloe vera juice in a mist bottle, three parts water, one part juice. Unless he's afraid of being misted, then you can add it to his bath water. It helps relieve irritated skin and it's safe to use. You might want to add a huge box of band aids, neosporin ointment and a bottle of peroxide for innocent passersby. :)

I actually have Angry Bird bandaids! Lol what a perfect bandaid for the bystanders to remember him by:p

I have used the cornstarch on my cockatiels before so we have that besides for cooking :D I think you are the one who recommended a brand of aloe vera in the regular human stores and we bought a huge bottle of it the other day. I already have the aloe vera sold by the bird store for my green cheeks dry skin and will definitely use it on Folger too:)

Thanks for the suggestions! I will have to create a birdie only supply of some of them to make sure we are never out.

What a funny little guy!!!! He's so adorable! Thank you for giving him another chance at life- he's lucky to have you!! :)

As far as socializing him with others, try and have them interact one-on-one in another room-- out of sight and hearing from you....if he can't see or hear you, he might be less likely to lash out.

Folger is so adorable and so cute !!!

Sure he will settle down once home and begin to socialize with others.

Glad Folger is going to be in capable hands and have a loving guardian.

Ohhh my god, what a cutie!!!!

I was surprised I could think a half bare bird was cute even after he bit me. I guess only bird people can understand. My stepfather thinks I'm a little crazy for wanting to take him on. And at the family breakfast I was asked why I would want to take on a bird with such problems instead of getting a baby. Apparently, some in the family will only take in kittens too instead of adult cats...not sure I understand people most of the time...

I finally picked a cage for him and will have it ordered sometime this week most likely. Luckily they are stored somewhere close and we can just pick it up instead of paying for shipping! I have a list of things I want from Bird Paradise in NJ so will order that probably next week since shipping literally only takes like a day since we are so close to them. I will start rearranging and messing with my room this week so the new cage and stand I want will actually fit:rolleyes:

Definitely think I'm birded out after this one! We were thinking of fostering for the shelter when we move in the summer though:D

Just playing catchup with the forum from the weekend... well, Victoria's description of our visit to see Folger was quite tame... I didn't just get bit, the little bugger charged at my hand from her lap up onto the table and latched on. I wasn't even going to her, I was reaching across the table. Tried the recommended using the other hand, pushing the beak... yeah, all that got me was him latching onto the other hand! He was like a rabid little pitbull :) didn't just latch down, the one hand had 3 chomp marks. I told her I am getting a birdie size tazer for when I have to spend time with him :) Okay, won't, but after the chomp session I did think a zap or too would be fair :)

We figured I would need to take him out when she's not home or in eyesight and go to a different room. My husband and I were pricing up the chain shark suits...

It sounds strange to say, but I don't think he is really a mean bird... considering what the poor guy has been thru in life, can't say I blame him for wanting to protect one person who came along that he wants to be with. He has been in the shelter since 2008, that alone is a long time for a bird to be confined... the rescue is wonderful, but no way they can socialize any bird to the extent they should receive in a home. He's so funny and such a character, we hope that some day (not expecting it anytime soon) he'll be a bit more social so everyone can enjoy him more.

For now, we are stocking up on first aid supplies, for us, not the bird!!
