Prince & Princess (Cockatiels)
can you please help me regarding my problem which is related to parrot discipline in flying.

"buchog" which is a blue nape parrot seems to like much being outside her cage. when she was a baby, letting her outside her cage wasn't a problem, but as she grows, she is learning little by little on how to fly, that exactly is my problem.

there are times when she sees me, she calls me and when i pick her up and place her outside her cage she will fly after a few seconds in any direction (mostly in the direction she is facing, she can't control her flight yet, that's what i think). the farthest of her flight is around 800 meters. i got late for work that time just by looking for her in my neighborhood.:mad:i am sure shes not afraid or don't like me because after her flight, she will get back to me.

is there anyway i can train her and make her disciplined in flying? i want her to be free in as much as possible but i don't want her to escape me too.:green:

In my opinion you should not let any parrot fly without a harness on. There is a big RED FLAG when you are frustrated that you had to go look for her in your neighborhood. That to me is not responsible parrot ownership. That parrot should not be outside unless in a cage or if it has a harness and leash. Your parrot will fly away and you will find yourself not only late for work, but missing work trying to find your parrot.

as said above harness is a must! for outside

as i think there will be a point when they will get spooked an fly off as that is there instints an then get lost

with my nut, fully flighted, i know she will fly off as she loves to fly, especially now its summer and all the birds are in full song, she would also like to investigate but the local crows will have her for lunch or just kill her as that is what they do, let alone the kestrals etc she'd make an easy meal

Harness your parrot. That or clip the wings, it will help you train her better. They'll grow back.

there are no flight harness available anywhere in our area. i think clipping the wings will be my last resort. i have to ask this to you guys, will it not a hand fed parrot since birth be bonded to its owner?

It will bond to you, but if it's not recall trained... or clipped, ,outside is a no-go. There's no telling what could spark her interest or spook her to escape, adn then that leaves you looking for your bird that may be gone forever. Look up wanda's critters and avian fashions... they have online stores where you can buy flight suits. they're both great businesses to work with.
