Flying in place

Most nights, Hubby gets Rocky on his T-stand and they have "flying practice," which is Rocky flapping his wings wildly while sitting on his stand, without actually flying.

He never does this, normally, except when playing with his daddy.

Last night, he didn't get his usual flying practice, and I was getting ready to tuck him in when UP came the crest and OUT came the face feathers and he started flapping his wings while sitting on my arm. Then he bobbed his head and danced. Then he flapped some more.

Ummm ... what are you DOING? It's bedtime!

Now, mind you, normally a full-on display like that means Mama's going to get chomped. But he didn't. He just did his flying practice and then snuggled up for a kiss and hug and went to bed.

guess you are on par with daddy....

It likely is mating behavior, that his way of showing off pretty much. My male does this to my female U2 a lot before to get her attention and then when she came close he would do his clicks with head down. It could be a night ritual he maybe doing as well?

Yes at times during the day they will exercise their wings, so you will see him do this time to time.

My Finley goes down to the bottom of his cage and flaps away when he is mad at me. That's the only time he flies in place.

Not sure if it's mating related or not, but mine does this when she is showing off (usually when in the presence of 2+ people and when she is really wound up because everyone is paying attention to her lol. She does it to get attention too sometimes. It seems playful to me. I could be wrong though. Almost always in the evening here.

Amy NEVER flaps on her own..only when I give her flapflap lessons! Beebs on the other hand does it on a semi-regular basis, and its usually when he is on my shoulder and smacks me in the head/face with his wildly waving arms!

Flapping Wings without lift is normally a very good thing. As a result, this directly cause increase muscle, heart and air-sack usage, which is very healthy for your Parrot. If your Parrot is not Flighted, I consider it a very good thing for their health. I would recommend that your household add to this; the humans walking with the Parrot flapping its wings. This connects wing flapping with movement and at some point flight.

Regarding mating behaviors: Each Species has different mating presentations. In addition, a specific parrot may have variations that differs form other parrots of the same species. Amazons will commonly, present lifted wings to a full wing presentation, which makes them appear much bigger. Where as a fully flighted Amazon that does a full folded wing lift could be moments away from a flight based attack. Now, with Amazons, there had been a number of warnings that such was about to happen.

It is important to know your Parrot's behaviors. Being aware of what your Parrot is doing and when will allow you to make connection /meaning to their body language. And, as always, asking here.

Rocky can fly when he wants to. He just prefers taxi service. The wing-flapping "flying practice" began when we first got him four years ago, as a game he and Hubby played for fun and exercise for Rocky. He also hangs on his cage door and does it sometimes by himself. He's just never done it while sitting on my arm before.

Mango goes this after a long stint inside right after being let out when we get in. It's good for all the reasons Sailboat said.
