Floyd - Alexandrine
Hi all,

I thought it was time I shared some pictures. My boy is looking just beautiful lately.

I bought Floyd a happy hut. I was fairly certain that he wouldn't use it but i thought I'd give it a go. He does have a swing/perch with all fleecy material around it, but has never touched it. Well, as soon as I put it in he was so excited. He was sitting on top of it swinging.

While I was busy, unpacking the rest of the goodies I bought from MSBS I notice he had actually climbed in!

It was so cute, he absolutely loves it :)

We just had playtime outside -

That's a happy little bird if I ever saw one! Keep the pictures/stories coming I'm sure we all love to keep up to date on floyd's adventures.

They are just so cute when are in their happy huts. Bundii has slept in hers from the day we brought her home. Even when she has been mischievous, she will put herself in there and start mumbling to herself. It's like she's been sent to her bedroom for being naughty. It's so funny to watch. :)

Aww... Floyd is gorgeous!

I've been wondering about getting my alex a happy hut...can I ask what size you got for Floyd? Our house gets cold overnight in Winter, I'd feel better if Ringo had something to snuggle in to keep warm.

I got him a medium size, but the next size up would probably be better :)

Thanks, that helps Camille.

Has he tried to chew it yet?...that's the only reservation I have about them - I do wonder if the polar-fleece ones might be safer if chewed on-?? So I'm not sure which to go for.

He is so cute. Since i have been on this forum, Alexandrines are my new 'obsession'. I never knew anyone with one, so never interacted with them. They seem like such wonderful companions and they are so beautiful.

Floyd is beautiful! He looks quite pleased with the happy hut lol!

I love seeing our birdies outside. I like to take mine out too but I don't see a harness on Floyd? Aren't you worried about him flying away? Even clipped a bird can still fly when startled.

No, he just plays with the beads and rope bits on it. Which is surprising because he destroys everything else. He hasn't even pooed on it yet! But I guess it depends on the bird.

wow, he so BEAUTIFUL :D

Please be VERY careful with the happy hut, one of our members had a bird be strangled over night in one :( I would never use one and I am stunned by how many people do.

He usually wears a harness. He gets frustrated with it after an amount of time, so for a couple of minutes i let him explore without it on. But his vet said one of his wings is slightly deformed and would have a hard time getting any amount of lift. Generally he just wants to climb all over me.

Wow, that's scary. This is in his play cage, which he is only in when I'm cooking dinner and I can see him the whole time. Seems a shame to take it off him just yet.... I will just have to be very mindful and watch him like a hawk! I'll remove it after loses interest. Thanks for the tip :)

I think the problem only arises when they've been chewed on a bit & there are loose threads etc. Just like rope perches, which LOADS of people use, but can be just as dangerous if left in the cage after starting to fray.

I ordered one, I went for the polar fleece which hopefully won't fray. I understand it's something I'll need to keep a close eye on.

I'm always worried when I see a bird outdoors without a harness primarily because I nearly lost one that way. My Ruby never flies and had always had a tight wing trim then one day sailed away right out of my arms! I had never realized that to the left of my house the area all sloped away to a soft downhill so she never had to get any lift! I found her later that day but spent a couple hours crying and terrified. Now I'm extra paranoid!

^ That is a pretty scary article :(
Maybe I'll have to rethink where I put Ringo's - the playstand might be a safer bet...he's always supervised when out of his cage. That means there'll be no overnight snuggling for Ringo though, which is when it does get cold here.
