Floor and Talking

We recently rescued an older yellow nape, and although we do have some bird experience, we are new with amazons.

Syd has only been with us a short time, and has not been very noisy at all. He has not attempted talking and seems to make one or two quiet noises. The other day he flew off of his perch onto the floor. Once there, he immediately decided he didn't like it and walked over to me. As he did, he said "Good boy", which was the first time he's spoken. Since then he has not spoken.

Is there any reason he spoke while on the floor? Any input would be helpful.

Thanks!

I have an Amazon as well, and have discovered that he will not scream on the floor. However, he will talk and say "Step up" and other various phrases. Perhaps he is looking for your attention so that you will pick him up and put him somewhere more to his liking. Maybe "Good Boy" is his version of "Hey, a little help over here". I'm no bird expert at all, but this seems like a step in the right direction! Maybe now that you've broken the ice, he'll start to talk a little more, as he gets more and more comfortable with you.

So, I think it might be an attention getting tactic, just keep encouraging him and talking to him, and hopefully he'll come around. At least now you know he's capable of talking, and has some kind of vocabulary!

Good luck with him, it's so nice that you rescued him :D

Good point Minzer.

Maybe the old owner had him crawl up his leg and would then say "Good boy" as he did it. That could be why that's the point in time that he chose to say it.

I agree though that it was probably some attention getting thing. Lucky you. I'm sure Minzer would prefer Iggy to say "Good boy" when he wants attention :D

First off Welcome to Parrot Forums, well done on rescuing Syd.

When he does talk make sure that you praise him up, he will soon get to know that you are pleased with him for doing that.

Do you know anything about his background?

We have a few people here with a lot of experience with Amazons, so any help/advise you want just ask and we will do our best to answer you.

Any Pics you have of Syd, we'd love to see him. :D

Yea, the good old days when Iggy asked for attention politely. Definitely encourage the talking and praise him for it, to try to avoid screaming later on...not that that worked for me  I just think also the more you talk to him directly in general, the more comfortable he'll feel talking back. Good luck, I'm sure he'll come around soon enough :D
