I'm taking Baby to the vet for the first time next week. She has an odd lump/swelling sort of thing happening on her neck and it has me really worried.
I found a vet in the area that I feel comfortable taking her to. He isn't an avian vet, he specializes in small animals (pocket pets) and wild animals. However he's rehabilitated many wild birds, felcons, owls, that sort of thing, and really seemed to know his stuff about parrots. I threw a few trick questions at him just to be sure, and he nailed every one, even gave me a few pointers I didn't know.
Now I've never been to the vet with a bird before, so what should all be done and what should I expect him to do?
Baby still refuses to let anyone but me touch her, she will bite bad, so the only way to get her checked out well, he said, would to to sadate her with a gas sadation. He said while shes under he can draw blood, check for mites and stuff to see if that may be causing her feather problems, of course check out her neck and figure out whats wrong, clip her nails and beak if needed, and give her an all over check up.
Does this sound right to you? (as in anyone who knows this stuff lol) What should I make sure he does or doesn't do?
Someone said we should just towel her to get her checked. Baby will scream bloody murder if you bring a blanket or towel near her and she panicks. I can tell she's been tramatized in the past and it would ruins months of bonding if I tried it. I don't think thats an option. Plus with the problem on her neck I don't think the vet could avoid being bit, or be able to check her over well in a towel. I think this sadation will be the best thing, however I could be wrong. Am I doing the right thing or will I be doing more harm with her?
This is going to be a huge vet bill, and I will most likely have to borrow money from my parents to pay the rent (a huge blow to my pride). I need to know that I will have everything done right and not forget anything.
