Quaker Parrot - "Carson"
This past Sunday, our cats alerted us to a Quaker Parrot in our rose bush. After rescuing it, bringing it inside and preparing a make-shift enclosure out of a tall cardboard box and my wire cake pan cooling racks, we set off to Pet Smart to get a proper parrot cage, food and toys.
I reported the found bird to our local Animal Control, but have heard nothing back. I also took "Carson" (I love Downton Abbey on PBS) to the avian vet where the bird was examined and was given an antibiotic and steroid shot to heal two puncture wounds (most likely compliments of our cats!).
We have been reading up on parrots, but we are interested to know what temperature they like best. Do we need to keep the temperature in the house at a certain level? And at what temperature range is it ok for a Quaker to be outside in their cage?
We need lots of advice!!

First, thanks for getting him to the vet. That was nice of you...

Okay. Lots of questions on this one.

1. Is it a tame quaker? I don't know if you know this or not, but there are feral flocks of wild quakers in Texas. If this bird is not tame, it may be part of a feral flock.

2. If he is tame, does he have a band? If so, he's probably someone's escaped pet bird, and they will probably be looking for him. Animal control doesn't do anything with parrots. Check lost and found websites... Put an ad on Craigslist, if you haven't already, and Parrot 911. (I notice there is one in San Antonio already.)

My birds are inside the house during the summer. It gets very hot here, so I keep them inside at around 70 degrees.

Hopefully you will be able find the rightful parronts, as im sure someone is missing the poor thing. Glad you got it to the vet. Keep us updated and im sure you will get great advice as the situation unfolds.

Hello and Welcome! :)

Thank you for rescuing the quaker and getting him to a vet! Quakers have an amazing ability to escape, that may be why there are so many feral colonies. I would like to share your excitement about your new friend, but please make every effort to find his or her original owners before you get too attached. Please keep us updated, best of luck.
