Hi!
I've grown up many with birds when I lived with my family and love them to bits, however, my experience is mostly with aviary birds, although they would let us handle them and were friendly.
I've now recently purchased a cockatiel (although I haven't picked it up yet as it's a bit far, I will be soon)
I thought I had put in research before deciding to adopt but have found out that there's still a lot I don't know in regards to keeping an indoor bird. This is my mistake and I should have definitely continued to research more but I'm hopeful that I can still make it work.
My living room and kitchen are open plan (I placed the bird cage as far as I could from the kitchen, but if needed I can move it to the bedroom, ideally if I don't have to id rather not keep it there permanently though, as we are mostly in the living area)
I recently found out about how much of a danger tefflon and non stick items are to birds and have purchased ceramic pots and pans. I had some more questions in regards to other dangerous items
* My oven isn't self cleaning but would it be okay to use for normal cooking with my bird in the living room (in the cage of course) ?
* I've seen some posts about aluminum foil and is it dangerous to birds if I were to use it to line the tray for the oven or stop spills when I cook for myself ?
* I have an air fan heater and have emailed the manufacturer about the use of tefflon but I don't know if I will receive a reply before I pick up my bird. I've read some online posts that if it's old and been used for a few hours on full heat it should be okay, but I'm unsure if this is true?
* I've seen some articles about how dangerous night flights can be and was wondering if I should use a smaller cage for sleeping/use a nightlight/cover the cage partially. So I was wondering if I should do all this straight away or see how it goes first?
Sorry for the long post and thanks for any help!! Any tips for a first time indoor bird owner would be appreciated as well, I know I'm still learning but I do intend to try give my best to my new feathered friend !
