Hello all! I realize I haven't posted in a couple months (although I've been reading). Things have just gotten so hectic with wedding preparations, I haven't had time to breathe haha.

Anyway. I decided to take Lizzy on an outting. Wanted to see how she would do to see if it would be worth it to me to buy an aviator harness. Wouldn't want to waste money if I wasn't gonna use it. So I put her in her carrier and we went to my work (I work at Petsmart).

Rough start at first :/ I opened up the carrier and she had thrown up a little :(. Picked her up and she just clung to the front of my shirt so scared she was shaking...

After a few offered treats and some soft words I coaxed her on my hand so she could get some water. And after a drink she was back to normal! Even did some tricks for my coworkers :) she met our conure Merlot (from a few feet distance) and chattered away at him! He wasn't sure what to make of her though! He seemed more jealous that I was holding another bird haha. She loved all of the attention she received. Kept showing off her feathers and strutting on my shoulder :) overall I would rate it a good experience. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures because I left my phone in the car :/

When I got home, I called the vet, told her Lizzy threw up and explained details. Vet said Lizzy would be fine so long as she's eating and drinking still and her poops are normal. I only had to bring her if she began acting unusual or threw up again.

She's now asleep on my shoulder. After such a big adventure she deserves a nice rest :)

Good on you for taking your parrot out and about for a bit of a new adventure! I bet she loved it.

Parrots can get motion sickness in cars, I know my GGC does. Did you drive to work? That would most likely explain the vomiting.

Yeah I drove, but it was also about 90 degrees outside :/ even though I had the ac on I think the heat affected her too :(

When GGCs start to get too hot, they'll start panting like a dog with their beak open and their feathers all pulled in as if they were frightened. It's a little scary when you first see it, but then again so is the vomiting from motion sickness.

Because GGCs can't sweat, I make sure Birdy's feathers are well and truly drenched with water before I head out on a very hot day (100 degrees and higher, we're in sunny Australia) and he doesn't notice the heat at all till he dries up!

When you love your bird, you learn to read the important body language - and what it means - very quickly!

It's basically a harness that you put on your bird. Similar to a dog harness, it attaches to a lead and allows freedom of movement while keeping your bird attached to you so it can't take off.

Of course that doesn't mean you don't have to keep an eye on your bird. Especially outdoors, you still have to be wary of predators, and making sure your bird doesn't get tangled in trees, etc. It's just a nice way of taking your bird on walks and outings with you so it doesn't have to stay in a carrier.

that is so cool.. how long can it stretch upto? and also, does it hurt the bird?

one more q - dont they chew on it ?

thanks

I think the leads can come in different sizes. So I'm not sure of the maximum length. If you get the right size, it shouldn't hurt the bird at all. And you do have to teach them not to chew on it. It's part of training them how to use it. When you buy a harness you get an instruction video with it.
