Perjo - Female CAG hatch Nov 2015
Perjo is a one year old CAG as of Friday. I made her this recipe of birdie bread, found it online.

“Birdie Bread”

1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup yellow corn meal
2 tsp baking power
3/4 tsp salt
½ tsp baking soda
1 Tbs sugar
2 eggs with shells
3 Tbs oil (your preference)
1 cup buttermilk

For Perjo I added pine nuts and banana slices.

I tasted it, it was alright, it was my very first attempt at baking bread or anything like a cake in my life. I feel I followed the instructions and measurements very well.

She hasn't taken more than one or two bites so far, but she has seemed to shy away from a new food only to love it a week later. We'll see.

how did it go? did he like it? Im thinking of making some for armando since I want to trick him to eat some coconut oil.

FYI there is controversy about leaving the shells. I personally do not.

She didn't touch the shells, so I won't bother with them in the future. She liked the bread in general though. Next time around I'm using palm oil or coconut oil in place of butter, and probably adding the powered egg protein to it and more ground up nuts.

The results of your very first attempt at birdie bread sounds yummy! I think I would leave out the salt and sugar completely, it really isn't necessary and can do more harm than good.

Oh and instead of sugar I add a banana as a natural sweetener

I puree banana and strawberry to replace sugar, and use red palm oil instead of butter. And then there's often times just a shredded veggie dump. Mine is cornmeal, oatmeal and a little flour, eggs, baking powder, red palm oil, and then the veggies vary by season. This last batch was Mexican squash, butternut squash, yams, broccoli, acorn squash, banana, strawberry. The veggies are shredded or finely chopped and the fruits are pureed. The birds love it. My vet suggested I puree spinach or other greens as well, so next time, that'll go into the mix.

I think Perjo was getting bored with my birdie bread, so I added a few things.

I used the basic recipe above but I added:

Mustard greens and bok choy leaves, raw carrots and raw cauliflower. Ran them through the food processor. Substituted flaxseed meal for one egg and added applesauce instead of sugar or fruits (for the sugar). With 5 minutes left to bake I sprinkled a little shredded chesse on top. She seems to like it as the first three servings this week she's eaten every morsel of it.

Go Perjo!

I also use pureed veggies and fruits to moisten the bread. Nigel loves peas, broccoli, cauliflower, eggs, zucchini, and a bit of cheese.
