hi, yesterday my bf and I went bird cage hunting and we found a cage we both liked, so we bought it without thinking if it'd be okay for a conure, which we're getting this wednesday.

this is the cage we bought
is 17"W x 13"D x 27.5"H

is the size okay?
thanks.

In my opinion no. I have one like that I use it for a travel cage. I have three small parrots and each one has a flight cage on a stand. The inside dimensions are about 21 " front to back, 32" side to side and 35'' top to bottom with bar spacing of 5/8 " they have a flat top . Conures are very active birds and need a lot of room lots of different size perches to exercise their feet, and lots of toys to keep them busy. Each cage comes on a stand with wheels. They all use every inch of their cages and I also clip tous on the top of their cages to play when they are out on top.. It is surprising when you get everything in it how much room that stuff uses. What type of conure are you getting?:)

I don't know how to post links but if you go to any of the pet store websites and look up flight cages or on ebay it will show you what the cages look like. Get the biggest cage that you can afford but for a conure you want to watch bar spacing and you don't need heavy duty such as one made for a macaw. Hope this helps and welcome to the forum:)

I would have to agree with ailray. It's a nice cage but it's much too small for a conure. Conures are extremely active birds who use up every inch of their cages and with all the toys inside its going to feel rather crowded in that cage. In my opinion a conure's cage should be no smaller than 20"W * 20"D * 30"H.

Congrats and best of luck with your new feathered friend. :)

Personally, I wouldn't keep any bird in a cage that small. That's just me.
This is Peeko's cage - [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Products-Wrought-F040-31-Inch/dp/B00176F5L0/]Amazon.com: Prevue Pet Products Wrought Iron Flight Cage with Stand F040 Black Bird Cage, 31-Inch by 20-1/2-Inch by 53-Inch: Pet Supplies[/ame]

I really appreciate all the input. I'm hoping the store where I bought it is willing to do an exchange. If not, can anyone recommend me a type of bird that'd be perfect for the cage??

Thanks.

My conure never goes in his cage. He loves being on the sides where I put lots of toys and he is right next to us. Even though he won't come on our hands yet. He is happier outside. I was going to get a large fun cage for him but now I'm glad I didn't. He is only 6 months old and already is the boss. Lol.

I would look for a larger one that also has a play top.

Maybe some budgies or finches...

I agree on the flight cages. They usually cost $100-$180, depending on where you buy from and how much shipping is... but they are a great price for the size! 32" W x 21" D x 35" H, for the cage alone, and it sits on a stand.

WHOA!!!!!!!! I dont try to be harsh, but that is WAY to small, even for a green cheek!!!

Don't put finches in there, they need more space(contrary to popular belief) because they need to fly around.

If you can't return the cage just sell it on Craigslist or something, you won't be able to get back the full price but you can probably get back 80%-90% of the money put into it.

Hopefully they're willing to exchange it for a larger cage. I threw away the receipt :(

I wonder if this cage is suitable for 2 lovebirds? Because my BF and I want either a conure or 2 love birds:confused:

if it is not ok for a finches, than most likely not a love bird either as love birds are only a little smaller than a conure. Sell it on Craiglist

Contrary to what the pets stores try to sell you that cage is not big enough for one lovebird let alone two. Remember the cage you end up with will be the birds home for many years..They need the bigger cages for both their physical health and their emotional health:)
