He is SO precious looking :) I should be bringing him home within the week if all goes as planned. He's been weaned for 2 weeks now. I can't wait to see him!

THIS particular baby has the yellow vest... Interestingly, SOME juveniles have this, some are plain gray. But this yellow front will go away as an adult. As a mature male, he will have yellow on the shoulders and legs and be gray otherwise. :)

Oh Julie, Griffin is stunning!!!!! It is so exciting that he will be coming home so soon, I bet it seems like you have been waiting forever now.
I am so excited to watch him mature! Thank you for taking us along on your journey with him:)

Really pretty. I think they have a dark, mysterious look about them. They have such interesting pretty colours. :) His name is perfect too. Really suits him.

Congratulations on the new baby! What a pretty bird Griffin is:D. I love that he will be mostly gray with splashes of yellow. That will be an interesting transformation to watch. Are ruppells parrots kind of an uncommon species? I don't know that I've ever seen or heard of them before you brought up getting one. Looking forward to updates about him.

He is just too cute..Alison:)

Thanks! Yes, they're the most rare of the Poicephalus genus. :)

Although rare, and when you can find them, they still aren't much more expensive than other Poi's. I think cause there is just not a demand for them. The Capes which are not as rare these days still fetch a very high price because they're very sought after. A lot of the lack of demand of Ruppell's probably has to do with the more subdued adult coloration and small size.

Well, you know if Griffin gets tired of that California sun he's welcome to enjoy some Texas hospitality :)

I don't know that I've ever seen even a photograph of this species, but he's absolutely gorgeous!

So exciting! Griffin is absolutely adorable! :)

Griffin is beautiful, Julie!!! And I'm digging the vest, even if it is temporary. The adult coloration sounds rather comely as well. Looking forward to pics of his homecoming!

Yes, I'm digging that yellow vest as well:D I'm hoping he's a freak and it doesn't ever go away lol! I'm confused though, as to whether the yellow on the shoulders of juveniles go away, then comes back later? From what I've read it's confusing. I think the temporary yellow vest on some babies is random? I don't think it has to do with gender.

Weird how the baby coloration is so variable. You've seen pics of a Nova, 'parrotlover1176' female baby who is a few weeks behind Griffin. She told me she has more pics coming today :) but while Nova is just as cute, she is totally different looking from Griffin!

Griffin is so gorgeous! I am so happy you finally have pictures of him! He looks like he has a very sweet, mellow personality!

Thanks!! I hope he's mellow :) like she says he is. I can't wait til we both have our babies home to compare personalities and such. :) Nova looks super sweet too!

Wow! He's absolutely STUNNING! You're going to be suckered in by those gorgeous liquid eyes and spoil the living snot outta him, I just know it ;) (I mean, Raven and Robin of living proof of this after all!)

I'm so excited for you and can't wait for an update when he comes home to you!

Well, I'm glad you found such a rare beauty;) Raven and Robin are both of the Poicephalus genus too right? Is Griffin about the same size as them or larger/smaller?

The only thing I've ever known about cape parrots is the "parrot wizard" has one (Truman) and his 'happy' screech is like nails to a chalkboard for me:52:. SO high pitched and shrilly. Is that typical of the POI's or just cape parrots or just that individual bird? No offense meant either, just curious;) Kiwi can be 10X louder decible-wise, I'm sure, just a lower-pitched holler. Everyone has a different 'tolerable' noise type:)

Thanks April! Griffin is in the same Genus as Robin. They're Poicephalus (little Africans):). They're both around the same size (Senegals, Meyer's, Brown Headed, Red Bellied, and Ruppell's) all look like the same "model" just painted a different color ;)

Raven the Bronze Winged is in the Pionus genus (South America) and as Birdman calls them "Amazon-lite" as they're said to be genetically closely related to zons. Pionus are about twice the weight of the smaller Poi's, (about like a white fronted Amazon size) though Raven is on the slightly smaller side for a BW at more or less 220 grams now.

The Capes like Truman are one of the two bigger Poicephalus species. I've met a few, but never heard the sound they make. I'd imagine it's louder than the small Poi's just because they're quite a bit bigger. The smaller Poi's aren't bad at all. Not a very powerful voice. I've heard some people say their screech is loud, but it's not.. It's nothing compared to most other species. Even their loudest blast is more of a whistle. They make a variety of natural noises and calls besides being good at mimicking. I've read that Ruppell's are even quieter than the other Poi's! We'll see.

Since you mentioned Amazon noise, I have to say... Thinking of many different species noises I've heard, the Amazon scream I think is one I would be able to tolerate easier than some. The pitch and tone doesn't bother me like some other species. In fact I kind of like hearing some of their natural noises :)
