African Grey Timneh
Today is the day I'm going to have to towel Timneh for the first time. We've been working on her travel carrier with little success. Our vet appointment is for 2:30 and I'm just counting the minutes. Feeling scared and nervous!:26:

Try to relax. Birds have a way of sensing our own anxiety and nervousness so as long as you are calm during this time it should help your bird. When the time comes, just get your towel, do it gently and you're done. Try your best to remain calm. It may help to take a look at these videos I've found. Hope that helps :)

Thank you. When I got her they toweled her and she as screaming and I had to go away I couldn't watch anymore. She and I have a much better bond though and I'm confident it will go much better. Thank you for the videos!!!

No problem, hope all goes well! After the vet you can work with your bird with a towel on a daily basis to desensitize her to it so on future trips she won't be as anxious.

Can you take Timneh into a very dark room for towling? Need just enough light to make sure you are wrapping her properly.

I know, it really hurts to see them scream, even though it is for the best.

Good luck, and let us know how the visit went.

Maybe let her out of the cage 15 minutes prior to time to leave, then have her step up and take her to a room where the travel carrier is and slowly back her into it?

Thanks everyone. The visit went well she bled a little from her beak trim. I could hear her screaming it was hard to sit and listen almost got up to comfort her. They took her to another room to do the trimming. They were very nice and the nurse has a avian rescue. The toweling went pretty well I got one little nip, and that was a last ditch effort as I pulled my hand out of the bag. The nurse put Timneh back in her bag like a pro, but we needed the towel again. Timneh whistled on the way home to some tunes. She also got a couple of handmade toys at the office to destroy. 85 bucks plus 12 for toys pretty good I would say. Says shes a good looking bird and got a clean bill of health. No tests done today. Listened to her heart, and checked her over. Excited to be back home, Timneh is going crazy with chatter!

Glad it went well!! Seems Timneh was well bribed and won't hold any serious grudges!!

Honestly she seems even more cuddly tonight!! Shes my baby. She took a good long nap this afternoon.

Sounds like she recovered quickly from the experience.
My Bella doesn't like anything out of the ordinary.

Glad all went well with Timneh! I posted awhile ago in one of your earlier threads about your up coming vet visit, that Smokey (also a Timneh) growled like mad dogs at first being toweled, that was the only way I could get her in her carrier.
But as soon as she was in the carrier, she too would whistle to the radio and "woo".
As the years passed, when she got toweled ( like after a shower) she'd just bite the towel and give me the hairy eyeball...she still didn't LIKE it..but tolerated it.
I bet Timneh too will also...given time.

Thank you Smokey sounds like she was an Awesome FID. I love timneh its was hard to hear her scream when I toweled her. The first time I let go; but I held on the second time. Timneh seemed very relieved to be back home, and on the ride home also.

Congratulations on a successful visit.

Most parrots are too smart for this, but the Rb falls for it everytime... the old toss-a-big-juicy-green-chile-in-the-carrier, and in he dive-bombs in after it. He realizes he's been tricked a second or so after the door shuts, and then he's furious, but he just can't resist the impulse to get the first bite of that chile.

Is there ANY treat (or maybe toy) that she would sell her soul for like that?
