Hi again!

My Crimson Bellied Conure (6 months old) LOVES scrambled eggs. My question is, how much and how often should I feed it to him? Most sources I've found talk about varied diets, etc., but they don't give recommended amounts. I'm really curious to hear what others think about this.

Darby is just beginning to grow in his second set of feathers and I'd like to give him a diet that will help promote healthy ones, as well as promote good health in general. I am currently feeding Harrison's pellets, some seeds (mostly hemp and safflower, as those are his favorites) and fresh and/or dried fruits and veggies daily. He also picks at millet sprays from time to time, but not daily. I should also note that I have to soften his pellets with juice (100% juice) in order to get him to eat them. He was weaned onto a seed mix and this is the only way I can get him to eat enough of the pellets for them to be a good portion of his diet.

He doesn't eat as much of any of those things as it seems he should be: 1 to 1 1/2 tsp pellets, 1 to 1 1/2 tsp seeds, and a small amount of fruits and veggies. He has pellets and seeds available at all times, but he never eats the full amounts I provide (2 tsp of each, daily). I may cut down on the seeds (or not leave them available all the time) in order to increase his intake of the pellets, but since he's so young, I worry that he won't get enough to eat. He only weighs about 61 g and has only gained about 3 g since I brought him home at the end of September. I thought he should still be growing and would weigh more than that when full-grown.

I'd love to hear what others with similar-size species of conures are feeding their fids, and how much their full-grown birds weigh, if possible. Any info you can provide would be helpful. THANKS!!!

Your conure's diet seems fine. My GCC's is very similar. She eats a little bit of everything. If you want him to eat pellets, then don't give him access to seeds. After about 5 months, don't soften the pellets anymore. They have to learn to use their beaks on hard food like in the wild to keep proper beak size. I give My GCC parrot size pellets; not conure size. She crunches them just fine.

Regarding his size, that's a bit small for 4 months. My Lily is 67 - 68g. GCC should be about 70 - 75g. Bird stops growing at 3 months. They only gain weight from there. Don't base your bird's size and weight by the book. Each individual is different like people.

Harrisons is awesome. I have both my birds on that.

You may want to look into their 'power treats' they are excellent and the birds LOVE them.

What I would do is use the pellets as the baseline, making it the only food that is available 24/7 and then offer treats/seeds sporadically throughout the day. What I do is put 'treats' in Skittles food dish on his playstand. When he has finished those - if he is still hungry he goes to his cage for regular pellet food.

Fresh organic fruits & vegetables are good treats, but if you are feeding him Harrisons, he is already getting EVERYTHING he needs nutritious wise and anything added is more a treat. Just be careful what you add to his diet. If you add processed seeds or processed foods to his organic pellet diet you are not only defeating the purpose of the organic diet but it can actually lead to problems. I'm basing this on what I have been told by my vet and by Harrisons reps.

Eggs are okay, in moderation with Harrisons. If you need to fry the eggs (for scrambling) only use pure vegetable oil for your non-stick base and don't use any more than necessary. I would say a teaspoon a day (of eggs) should be the max. The Harrisons should make up 80% of the diet. Also, you can feed them the shell too - just make sure it's cooked, like in hardboiled.

:)
