Hi,

I have a question regarding faucets. I have to change my faucet and wanted to know does the metal type in the faucet matter ? When someone moves into for example an apartment, you are stuck with what you get...

Thanks

No, I think you are safe with anything you buy. I've never heard of anyone buying a certain kind before.

Hi Terry,

Thank you for your quick reply. The one I've bought (before it occurred to me could be toxic) says it is made of brass, is brass not toxic to birds ?

Thanks!

I never even thought of brass, thank you for mentioning that!
I have no idea, Googling only cautioned about locks, etc made of brass.
It seems that if a brass faucet was leaking zinc into the water that that would be a health hazard for people as well.

Hopefully someone else will weigh in on this.

You can buy still water and give that to your pets.

Tap/municipality water sometimes have chemicals added that are fine for us, but long term can harm birds. Not commonly spoken about in the bird community.

Hi thank you for your reply,

But what about washing vegetables, she eats them daily, also with bottled water ?

I use tap water for my birds, and my faucet is made from stainless steel.

If the tap were leaching chemicals into the water, they could not use it for a faucet for people. Metals are toxic to people, too.

I wonder if the inside part of the faucet is not brass but is steel, and the outside is a heavy layer or coating?

I don't think rinsing is that much of an issue.

Water provided by a city (government unit) in North American and Western Europe is tested at least yearly. The results are available on their Website. Note: Those groups commonly test regularly and one will see warnings from time to time to boil or not use the water for a specific period of time, commonly as a result of a water main breaking. Heavy metal can occur in older City's that had used lead pipes. Once again, that is reported on the City's Website.

Single user wells (water source) should be tested regularly especially an older well as a water source close to the surface can become polluted!!

Faucets and water fixtures: It is true that older faucet that are casted from Brass can contain Lead and that is true for older homes that used Copper Pipes as the sealer used did contain Lead. Those industries have stopped using products or manufacturing technics that had used Lead (faucet and water fixtures). The change started about twenty years ago. Since near all water sources are fairly high in Calcium most all homes and buildings water pipes and faucets have a build-up of calcium deposits (commonly white in color) which keeps an Lead from leaching into water passing thought them. In the past, it was common for individuals to run their faucets for a minute prior to drinking or using the water for rising or cooking. Regardless of age, that is still a good practice today.

Should you change out your older faucets? That is a question that each individual must answer themselves. If you are remodeling, yes!! If your City water source has changed its source or is using specific chemicals that effects the calcium deposits, yes! Example , see Flint Michigan, USA, Lead Found in Drinking Water reports. Also, have your water tested, if you have concerns!!

Brass is safe, and while mostly replaced by stainless steel in the average commercially sold faucets, personally I would not change out a fixture solely because it is made from brass. Most likely all the elbows, valves and couplings are made of brass, so just changing the faucet would not really help. Maybe a case of being overly concerned?

Thank you for your replies. I actually have it already installed just last week, but was going to ask the repair man to come back and switch it to a new one I was going to buy, if there are issues with brass and toxicity.

Here is the one I installed recently: https://www.rona.ca/en/product/proj...uX6kTGaHbIAzPZvCaSYaAgM9EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
