Female Eclectus-"Roxy"
Three months ago when I got 3-year-old Roxy, the vet told me that she was overweight. She did not look overweight to me, but the doctor showed me that her keel was not protruding. Her previous owner had kept her in an extremely small cage (24x20x20) and she at a lot of seeds. For the past three months, I have had her in a much larger cage (36x24x60) and she eats her special eclectus mix and tons of fruits and vegetables. Absolutely no junk food. Not even cheese or bread. However, I have not seen any change in her weight. She still has this chubby little chest, and I was wondering if maybe that is normal for the females. Does the time of year have anything to do with it?

is she flighted??

she might need some excercise to tone up??

although she is eating a good diet, her calorie intake might still be exceeding what she burns off in her day to day activities

Her previous owner did not clip her wings and said that she used to fly to her. When I adopted her, I had no choice but to clip her wings because she was untrained and semi-agressive, and if she had flown somewhere high, I would never have been able to get her down. (Her wings have almost grown in by now, and now that she is doing well with her training, I don't plan on clipping them.) Anyways, from the first day I got her to now, three months later, she has never once even attempted to fly. In fact, she almost never flaps her wings at all. I will admit that she is very sedentary. I have a tree for her, and she just likes to sit quietly on it, or on my arm. Any other ideas on how she can get some exercise?

other then make her forage harder for her treats or come across the room to you, should do for now, she might just not have an energetic personality lol

please don't feel that is because you clipped her etc, just avoid high calorie fruit an veg, things like corn, bananas, pulses

but with saying that i have notice my bird can look chubby depending on her mood, so just wiegh her next vet visit, if she is settling in fine, on a good diet, her wieght will come off as she starts to fly, forage etc and she may have lost some already, but just not at a noticable rate

We have an adult female eclectus here. What species & weight is she??? Also what is the special eclectus mix you feed her. That may be full of fatty foods.???
Normally, you can feel the edge of the bone but it is more or less even with the muscles on the bird's chest, so it is not very prominent. However, in a skinny (underweight) bird, the keel bone is very prominent and the edge of the bone feels very sharp. In an obese bird it is very difficult to feel the keel (often there is just a groove where the keel would normally be felt).

Not a good way of checking weight using a scale is way better.

Eclectus have a tendency to day dream. So they seem content just sitting still. But mine are nosey little brats. It doesn't matter what im doing, they would be right there involved....i have no privacy, they lean over and peek in the bathroom to see what im doing....or they walk in without knocking...lol

LOL. Mikey it's worse when they come in the toilet & ask "What are you doing". I am so glad you are enjoying your pair so much. I don't think you can truly appreicate them as a companion parrot until you actually live with one for awhile.

I don't find any of my eclectus to be the day dreamers either. In fact if they appear a little listless i worry that something maybe wrong.

She is an SI eclectus. Three months ago she weight in at 530 grams. Which still baffles me to this day. Honestly, she was on a perch, and I don't think they tared the scale before they weighed her. Her eclectus mix has two different kinds of natural pellets, dried green beans, dried sweet potato, coconut, dried papaya, cashews, almonds, walnuts, dried hot peppers, pistachios, cuttle bone, cinnamon sticks, and soy nuts. It's from Bird Paradise, which is the largest bird store in the country, so I'm pretty confident in the mix. Plus, I don't give her that much of it.

our female has her wings clipped to exercise her wings, she sits on my husbands hand and he holds his finger over her feet and he moves her up and down and she hangs on flapping her wings, shes a good weight but because shes getting a bit older we have cut her seed out and only giving her a little bit, 2 am this morning she decided she wanted a midnight snack! crunching on her seed, anyone would think we starve the poor baby!
