I adopted this little cutie yesterday. She is two years old and her name is Paulina. The only information I have is that she is a Fancy Green Cheek. This is my first conure and I'm looking forward to getting to know more about my little darling. Are there subspecies of Fancy Green Cheeks?

Thanks for your help!!

Welcome to the forum and congrats on you new baby!!! The originally color is the Green Cheek then all the newer colors were bred to be such as Pineapple, Yellow sided, Cinnamon, etc.

Thanks Mikey. I suppose my avian vet will be able to tell me which one she is?

Yours looks like a regular Green Cheek to me! :)

Thanks again Mikey. It doesn't really matter to me of course, I just don't know much about them other than the breeder I purchased my female eclectus from had one and I fell in love with him. Of course, she wouldn't part with him although I tried very hard. LOL.

Hello! Welcome and congratulations on becoming a green cheek owner!! ^.^

My Kiwi was listed as a Fancy Green Cheek as well, but I found out she is actually a cinnamon. Here is a pic of her:

oh, what a beauty she is.

I think she's a yellowside, not a normal.

Conashstu, "fancy" is just a lazy term that stores like Petco or Petsmart use to describe mutations. It is not an actual mutation name nor is it a subspecies.

Are there subspecies of green cheek conures? Yes there is! However, it is unlikely that you'll be able to determine which subspecies your green cheek conure is as I don't think we have any pure green cheeks within America. People stopped caring about the different subspecies of green cheek conures or they couldn't tell the subspecies apart and hybridized them, so depending on their blood will depend upon which subspecies they take after the most - if it's even possible to determine that.

Regardless of what she is, she's lovely! And green cheeks are charming little birds!!! Gratz on your new addition!

LoL....Yes breeders do have one of those babies they can not part with, that means she's a good breeder. If you meet a breeder that don't hesitate to sell any bird, then all that breed thinks about is $$$$$$$. If I raised a baby I fell in love with, he's not going no matter what anyone offers me. That's happened before too....lol....

What a little cutie, and I love her name! I think she is either a yellowside or a normal. Look under her wings, if they are bright yellow...then she is a yellowside.

I have a turquoise and a yellowside GCC, and they are my little bratty babies! The minute I got them, I turned into a crazy bird lady. They changed my life!

I know you will have lots of fun with little Paulina!

Oh, one more thing: Monica is right. I think chain pet stores tack on the word "fancy" so they can up the price.

It might be Yellow Sided but it is hard to tell because she is wearing a yellow shirt while taking that picture.... :)

Only she can really tell us what her bird looks like after viewing pictures. :)

Thanks everyone. I knew I could count on you all to help educate me on these wonderful little birds. As I said before, it doesn't matter to me what type she is I just have never had any experience with them and like any good parront, I need to learn as much as possible as quick as possible since I've already adopted her. She is quite the character for sure. The young man I got her from is a Navy pilot who adopted her from someone else who got her from PetSmart. His flight schedule has gotten so hectic that he felt it was in her best interest to rehome her. He only had her a year (she is 2) but did a fantastic job with her. She will go to anyone and does flight recall, although I dare not take her out until I can get her into and used to a harness. I love that she is flighted as all of my other birds we keep clipped. Thanks again everyone. I'm sure I will have more questions.

Wow, I checked out the link and they come in a lot of different variations. And all so beautiful.

Sounds like her previous owner was fantastic with her! Shame he had to give her up, but she'll bring joy and happiness to another home! And that's yours! :)

The link I shared doesn't even show all of the subspecies of green cheeks, so there are some other variations out there!

Thanks MonicaMc. It is a shame he had to give her up. After meeting him and her I asked him several times if he was sure, because it was obvious how much they cared for one another. But he felt it was the responsible thing to do. I feel very honored that out of all the inquiries he received he selected me (and my family) to love her and give her a forever home. He said after seeing the picture I sent him he knew we were the family for her. He is probably still cracking up at me. I am known as the crazy bird lady in my neighborhood. LOL.

Oh my god that stroller is awesome!

I also think it's a yellow sided green cheek.

Looks like a normal female to me... the yellow-sides have stripes of pure yellow on each side of their bodies and a redder belly. She looks just like my Codee (ex-Cody because previous owner thought it was a male) and she also has the Fancy added to the Green Cheek conure on her original bill of sale -it means nothing whatsoever.

Due to the fact that her feet are pink she should be a yellow side. I have found that all the normal's have black feet. Now I am no expert but this is what I have found with mine. Yellow sides & pineapples have the pink feet. I believe the cinnamon as well. I just bought a male split to yellow side & turquoise and I am pairing him with a cinnamon turquoise so I will see what I end up with and what their feet look like. So far this way of telling what they are when they are really little has worked 100% with me and the ones I am breeding.
I agree with Mikey, when a breeder cannot part with a baby they are not only in it for the money! I have a little what I would call "runt" that I have held back. He was soooo slow to mature and he is finally looking like a beautiful yellow side however I don't want to part with him! I have had so many people try and buy him and as of yet he is staying here. I however do not need another pet bird so not sure what the future will hold for my little "Elroy"! LOL
