Today my fiance and I took a short road trip to a smaller parrot store we heard about through the grapevine. We had assumed that since the store was not well known, and completely out in the boonies that we were just going there for a 5 minute look around and then going to hit a nice restaurant for lunch. It was located in a town about 30-45 minutes away from home and finding the place was a nightmare! It was tucked into a run down, old strip mall outside of town. We parked, and got out of the car thinking that this place was going to be a bit of a drag, to say the least. Entering the little shop we were SHOCKED, even my non-avian-enamored fiance was amazed! They were single-handedly the BEST BIRD STORE I have ever been too! I just can't get over it! They had maybe, 900 SQ FT of store space and we spent over an hour in there!
The store was astoundingly clean, well organized, and the owner and her assistant (the extent of the staff) were just wonderful kind people! The entire time we were there all we heard were happy chirping parrots! They were all in great feather and just looked amazing! Not to mention all of them were amazingly friendly, and the "staff" knew every little thing about each and every parrot in the store. And they had nearly everything I could imagine, there were Hawkheads, Eclectus, Macaws, Greys, Budgerigars, Cockatiels, IRN, Lovies, Cockatoos, Amazons, Conures, an Alexandrine, and of course...a Jardines (Unngh!).
There were baby Macaws greeting us at the door with adorable smiles, and then short neat, tidy rows of cages leading us to my nirvana...the "bird room." I spent an entire hour playing with shoe cockatoos (they liked shoelaces and riding on the tops of your shoes), a darling Eclectus called Rose, a Citrine Cockatoo that adored us, and a snotty little Jardines which I could not keep my hands off of. All in all there were probably 30ish birds in the bird room, and you were free to frolic and cuddle all the birds you desired! And was it CLEAN, I have never seen a cleaner store in my life. The owner and her assistant were scrubbing when we arrived and then again as we were leaving, completely dedicated to their birds. Cages all looked brand new, and all of the birds were clean and tidy. And after my fiance ripped me from the bird room with a truck and a wench, I got to buy Kippy a bunch of new toys because the prices were unbelievable.
I now have a gas money crisis, since I HAVE to go visit the little Citrine Cockatoo girl and the snotty little Jardines boy again soon. I found my tiny slice of parrot infested heaven, and I am dragging my fiance in with me. MUHAHA!
OH! The shop is called "The Parrots Nest" and is located in Richmond, KY.
