I've been reading this forum for over two weeks now but just decided to finally join. I used to own cockatiels a few years ago. I've been wanting another bird since but was interested in taking the next step up. I did a lot of research, I also live in an apartment. Which lead me to discover the Green Cheek Conure. Hearing peoples stories and everything I read about them made me fall in love with the GCC.
A few weeks later a Petco opened up near my home. I went to the opening, purchasing a 55 gallon fish tank. From day one to the several days I went afterwards purchasing things for the tank; I walked by the birds and one GCC would come up to the glass everyday and run back and forth. All while staring me down and occasionally stopping to look at me.
It took me about a week before I ended up bringing him home. My boyfriend had already named him Happy Feet in the store. So we kept that name, I don't really now if he is a boy but that's what I have been calling him, and he turned three months today.
So far it's going surprisingly well, I didn't think we would start bonding so quickly. I'm used to placing my hand in a cage for 10-15 minutes several times a day and then waiting weeks before I'm even tolerated. Day two I took Happy Feet into the bathroom and opened his cage, trying to show him he didn't have to be cooped up in there all day. He immediately took to me. Now it's not perfect, we have tons to work on. He isn't a big fan of stepping up and he loves to wrestle and while I don't mind it. It's so adorable he lays on his side and tries to grab my finger with his leg and at times gently nibbles on me or lightly pecks. Then sometimes he bites me pretty good, gets a little into it.
I've only had him for a week and two days though so I know I'm already off to a good start but have a ways to go. I'm also aware it's not going to happen over night and while we have started to bond, he doesn't completely trust me. That's going to take time, so for now I'm going to enjoy the baby phase and watch my new baby grow.
WOW! Guess I got a bit carried away...did I say that I was excited with my new journey and my new buddy.
