Euthanasia for a Broken Leg?

Yes, you heard correctly.

For those not familiar with my parrot Gomez’s (eclectus) tragic end the day after surgery for a broken leg, details can be found at my website at http://www.VetsGoneBad.com

The vet’s assistant has now posted at http://www.insiderpages.com/b/3710898971 that they offered euthanasia as an alternative to doing surgery on Gomez’s broken leg (scroll down to post by Darlene H).

I apologize if my posts are tedious, but I completely trusted this highly recommended vet and, if it can happen to me, it can happen to you. I’m assuming it’s not a far leap to assume that most people would want to know about a vet who thinks euthanasia is a good suggestion for a 7 month old Eclectus parrot with a broken leg. There are also other updates on my site regarding recent events.

Thank you for the support I’ve received during this horrible time, which has been made even worse by this vet, and now his employees.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss and if the vet acted inappropriately then they should be held accountable. I think the words from your site "blind trust is dangerous for our pets" is very true. But undeserved distrust of the entire profession of veterinary medicine portrayed elsewhere in your site is at least as dangerous.

Veterinarians do have to make difficult decisions; the best veterinarians do need to consider euthanasia as an option when a pet is suffering and the proper treatments cannot be arranged. If a human goes into the hospital suffering and cannot afford treatment basic treatment is provided at the governments (taxpayers) expense (this is in the US at least.) Veterinarians do not have this option, if they treat an animal without payment it comes out of their own pocket; and while it is a good career field it pays nothing like a (human) medical doctor.

I've worked with enough vets to know what happens to those who get attached to every patient and pay out of their own pocket for every injured animal who comes in if the family can't afford it. Those people end up never going home, it strains or even destroys their family life, they become unstable and need to see a therapist which they can't afford because they are going bankrupt.

The world is not perfect. Again I'm very sorry for your loss, and if the vet you went to did conduct themselves wrongly then by all means you should let everyone know about that vet - but a generalized distrust of the veterinary field is dangerous and undeserved.

After reading through your website, and the letter from the vet's lawyer I have to say that you are really on a shaky ground. The way that someone wins a libel lawsuit is to prove the truth, and in this situation, it would be a fairly easy case ...

I know you are upset, and I know that you feel that you have been hurt and you are upset about the loss of Gomez. And I even agree with you about your "blind faith" statement. I also understand that you feel that your outlet is now on the internet; but, even under the First Amendment there are things that you can and CAN NOT say (e.g. you can not run into a crowded theater and yell "FIRE" if there isn't really one). Please be careful with your future courses of action, with all the bad that is going on surrounding your loss of Gomez you don't need, nor want, a law suit to go on top of it.

I my self after reading most of your story have 1 question Did any one before the surgery or for the necropsy run a gram stain?? that would have given a good picture of his preexisting or post health. at a cost to the vet of $3.00 and 2 minutes of time.

Gomez now in Rainbow Bridge a wonderful place when passing on.
Remember you had wonderful times, great memories never to be forgotten.

I mean, we rely our vets to act in a professonal manner and go with our orders. it's like a doctor going in for surgery, sees something he thinks is also bad in his patient's insides and takes it out without asking knowing for sure and without permission. So sad, Gomez is in rainbow bridge.

Hello! I am so sorry for your loss. And I know it probably has turned you off to vets. I just want to say that as a Vet technician, we try to fix broken bones without surgery first. Legs and wings can be splinted. We have 5 vets in our office and 2 of them are avian and exotic. They are fantastic, but I will not allow my birds to be put under there because we do not have a ventilator to use with the birds while they are out. It helps to keep the birds breathing. Not many vets do have the specialized equipment to use on birds while under. Luckily we do have an avian spe******t in our area that does have this equipment and a wonderful track record. I actually take my birds to her for specilized treatment.
