You will have to call the company and get details of chemicals and material used for this fireplace. They are a newer item so I do not now much about them.
When ethanol burns properly the waste should be water vapour and carbon dioxide, which are both safe. When it doesn't burn correctly (not enough oxygen) it will give carbon (blackening around burner) which is safe, but dirty, and carbon monoxide, which is dangerous in an enclosed room. So, like any fuel burning stove,or engine for that matter, the air/fuel ratio needs to be right.
Undoubtedly, although ethanol cookers/heaters are rarely used in this country, Oz, except for camping/hiking (I have a small Swedish cooker for just that). Ethanol (as "metho", methylated spirits, to preclude the fuel being drunk ) is quite expensive here. The houses I've lived in with a bathroom heater have all had an electric bar radiator mounted high up on the wall (to preclude splashing/electrocution) with one of those old string pull switches.
