Ekkie friends?

Hey All,

I had a friend ask me today, when I showed her a pic of our new baby Arnie, if Ekkies can be housed with other birds (I assumed she meant other parrot breeds). I said I didn't think so but thought I ask the experts as we've never had an Ekkie before. I know they are communal but from what I've read they don't generally 'play well with others' when it comes to other breeds. Is this the case?

Eclectus get along with each other at least the boys do, females can be a bit testy with each other. They don't care for other species of parrots in my experience but I am certain someone somewhere has the exception to that rule.

Thanks. Yeah all the articles I've read say 'generally no, but....' You obviously wouldn't want to risk harm to either feathered friend by putting them in a potentially dangerous situation.

My Red Sided Eclectus (male & female) were the exception. They got along splendidly with my Yellow Naped Amazon. But they were NOT housed together. They were, however, allowed to share the Java trees during play/out time.

My female Eclectus tolerates various cockatoos for interactions on neutral grounds, ie. communal playstands, cage tops, etc. They have a difficult time not trying to groom her molting feathers, because, surprise, Ekkie upper-body feathers are single stranded! I would never house them in the same cages, though.

My story is one that I know doesn't always turn out this way. I once had a female Ekkie at the same time as a Slender Billed Too, and when I got the SB, she bugged the Ekkie to be her friend to the point she wouldn't take no for an answer. The Ekkie was indifferent. Finally she gave in, and they became very close actually. They'd preen each other often (mostly it was the Too begging to be groomed lol). They would surprisingly even both sit on the Ekkie's "bed" branch in her house! The Ekkie was mature too! This was one special girl (or an unusual one)... Even after sexual maturity she was pretty easy going and very tolerant of me and other birds, and never once bit me hard enough to draw blood.

The SBT was raised by an awful handfeeder, and was never fledged. Her Ekkie friend patiently taught her how to fly. I lived in a huge townhome style apartment at the time with a big living room and high ceilings. It was perfect back then. Making me a little watery eyed reminiscing about it... Lol.

They always have the capacity to surprise! Before my first bird, I had lamely assumed they were cute little automatons with virtually identical personalities. Not so!!

Yeah, we're discovering Arnie's personality very quickly. If he's at the back of his cage on the rear perch he really doesn't like being disturbed. At the front he's OK. It's like the rear perch is the 'leave me alone I'm cranky' perch.

My ekkie loves the other birds we have, but they are quite scared to have him close....it may be just the personality of the particular ekkie I would definitely never try to keep them in the same cage, however.

I've had both a male and a female foster in my aviary (not at the same time.) At the time I had 11 birds, everything from conures, to cockatoos, to amazons, to macaws...

They did fine out on the big playstand. They didn't really mingle with the other birds, but they didn't attack them either. Just picked out their spot on the playstand and claimed it...

Eckies are flock birds.

They are a lot like amazons in that they like their space... from other birds. (Don't get right up next to me.) But they didn't go seeking out trouble - like for example - CAGS and some macaws will.

Yeah, but the pic posted upside down! Didn't see a way to edit correctly!!

EDIT: I turned the pic upside down in the phone, saved as, and reposted, but it still appears upside down!!

Did you use an iPhone? It depends on the position the phone is in when the pic is taken. I forgot which direction the home button needs to be. I admit I am not sure how to correct it. I'm finding out info for you. Either another mod will correct it, or I will when I find out how to do it!

Can't help with 'positioning' of any smart devices, sorry. I simply uploaded photo to Photobucket and rotated it there.
