I have a female eclectus that I've had for a couple of years now. Every once in awhile she lays an egg but fie the past couple of weeks she has been sitting on the bottom of her cage in the corner like she was setting on eggs but there are no eggs. She comes up to eat but then goes back to the corner. She seems healthy and her droppings are.normal. Has anyone ever had one do this before?

As this is 'not normal' behaviour it would be best to take her to see your CAV for a check up. Abnormal behaviour is sometimes the only sign that your bird is unwell. Can you feel any sign of an egg being there? Is this is the case do not delay and go straight away please.

From what I can tell, there is nothing there. She had laid an egg just before she starred doing this

Any updates on this? Plumsmum's question about the egg is an urgent one. You mentioned that she laid an egg right before doing this. Normally, ekkies lay in clutches of 2 or 3. So if she only laid one, you have to consider the possibility that she is egg-bound. Egg bound birds often sit on the cage floor. This is a potentially lethal scenario, so you should definitely get her in to a certified avian vet.

Now I'm no expert on egg binding, and a couple of weeks does sound long for such a condition to persist, but regardless this is something you should get checked ASAP. Even if it's not egg-binding, chances are good that something is going on.

Well, we went to the vet this morning and Belle checked out fine. A little overweight. Since we've been home, she hasn't gone in the corner once. Maybe we broke her routine. She does like eggs and the vet did say maybe she was getting too much protein so I'm going to lighten up on the eggs for awhile.

Well, we went to the vet this morning and Belle checked out fine. A little overweight. Since we've been home, she hasn't gone in the corner once. Maybe we broke her routine. She does like eggs and the vet did say maybe she was getting too much protein so I'm going to lighten up on the eggs for awhile.

Thanks for updating us and pleased nothing serious. Please take the fact that she is a little overweight seriously and perhaps reduce her rations a little and more importantly try and get her moving more, more activity, foraging for her treats and flying! Being overweight can lead to more serious issues. A good thing to know that she is a bit high on protein also so that can be rectified. Would love to continue to hear how Belle is please?

Please take the fact that she is a little overweight seriously and perhaps reduce her rations a little and more importantly try and get her moving more, more activity, foraging for her treats and flying! She really loves human food but not fruits too much. She loves pasta which I will have to curb. She's out of her cage a lot but never flies even tho I've never clipped her wings. She was a rescue bird that was mistreated in her first home, but she never bites and loves to play with her toys. She's really an awesome bird

Pastas not so bad if it's whole grain pasta. I give my ekkie whole grain rotini as a treat when we come home, he loves it! I occasionally throw some whole grain macaroni noddles in with his dinner.

Whole grain being key here. High fiber!

Yes but its not the whole grain kind that we eat. My husband won't eat the stuff. I guess I could buy her her own box

Feathers, what exactly is her diet like? In the manner I treat noodles, I promise you pasta would not be contributing to any of your issues (for a separate thread), so if he's registering as too much protein I would really take a hard look at what you are consistently giving him in larger quantities and on a regular basis. How much did she come back weighing?

Speaking of protein, this thread actually reminded me I need to get Parker a little by of boiled egg and shell. He's just started his annual molting.

Yes afraid so, 1oz/25g cooked wholewheat = 1.5g of protein. Not huge but if you need to reduce it still counts.

BTW total carbs 7.5g
