Hi I am new to all this so hope all goes well!! I have a breeding pair of eclectus. My hen is now the proud mum of one 4 day old chick. This is my first time to breed parrots. My problem is which is the best nesting material for the eclectus. Some sites say wood chips others say definitely do not use wood chips. I have a few large wood flakes in the nest box at the momement, but not many. The hen seems to push these chips to one side so the chick is on the bottom of the wooden nestbox. I have concerns over the chick getting splayed legs. Otherwise she is feeding the chick herself and so far so good. Please any ideas from experienced eclectus breeders would be greatly appreciated. Obviously I want to do the safe correct thing. Thanks!!:)

No cedar, redwood or pine chips.....if you can find aspen chips, they're OK.....

No wood pellets because you have no idea what's in them.....

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new chick:)

Thanks! Its worse than having children of your own!! I have to keep listening to the nestbox to make sure I can hear the baby. I haven't handled the chick yet. Thought it was best to leave mum and baby alone for a week or so. Hopefully everything goes ok!:)

Welcome to the forum. I can't help you any with raising baby parrot. I have a female ekkie, but she is strictly a pet. Good luck with your new extended family. Hope to see pics of the babies when they are old enough to be handled.

Love the pictures. Your birds look fantastic!! Looks like you've got your hands full! My ekkies are also pets, its just that she laid a few batches of infertile eggs before, so when I realised these were fertile I thought I would have to let her have one batch of chicks. This will also be my pet. Couldn't bear to part with him/her!!
