Hi All,
Was just wanting to get your opinion on what to feed my Eclectus. I've had her for a little over a week and although she's a good eater & is putting on weight (I weigh her every morning) I know how important nutrition is and want to make sure I get it right.

I keep reading conflicting thoughts on what to feed. At the moment she has lots of F & V, spouted seeds, a few nuts everyday and on occation a boiled egg with shell & chilli & weet-bix Some ppl say pellets others say no way to pellets what do you all think??

Pellets are good, and most people say that it should make up a large percentage of the diet; over the seed mixture. Go ahead and offer some pellets, it's alright. I'm sure the conflicting information on the internet is quite a nuisance to you. Just please make sure you use some good brands (Kaytee, zupreem, etc.). Quality matters so much.

By the way, kudos to you for offering such a varied and nutritious diet! ;)

I'm with PQ - it sounds like you are offering a great diet.

Pellets are handy, and that is precisely why they are usually a good idea. Most bird owners wouldn't be able to provide a well balanced diet without pellets. If you can then pellets are not (strictly) needed.

The general advice is to have good pellets as the main staple of their diet, then feed them fruits veggies and the like in addition. The better you are at providing a well balanced and complete diet though, the less important the pellets are.

I still think they're a good thing to have around and have her used to eating - just in case you ever can't invest the time in preparing her normal meals she could be content to chow down on some pellets.

So, all in all, there are several good brands of pellets which are well worth it and I'd suggest trying them out; but they certainly aren't a necessity given the good diet you're already providing.

Thanks so much for the advise (and encouragement). I had my cockatoo on pellets but wasn't sure with the special requirements Eclectus have nurtiritionally. The net is a great place but sometimes there is too much info out there.

Mel, your eclectus is gorgeous!

I could so easily become that "crazy bird lady". I would love to have a female eclectus and maybe a male, and I think a bronze winged pionus, possibly a goffin or a Major Mitchell cockatoo, a scarlet macaw and maybe a harlequin...

All this in addition to my Alexandrine, my husband's red-front macaw, and the CAG that I'll be getting the end of the summer. Yeah, I could easily get out of hand.

Hahaha I love it, I think it would be great to be a "crazy bird lady" If I won the lotto I know what I'd be spending it on! Major Mitchells are stunning, one of my friends mother has one, she is very hard work (the bird not the mum).

Hi Mel
Reading stuff on the internet can be confusing!

I came across this website that might be informative:
ECLECTUS

also check Eclectus Parrots

Hope this will be of some help.
:green:

thanks for the links. I've been on the land of vos but haven't seen the other one, greatly appreciated. I think we've nutted out all the food issues. I do offer a very small amount of pellets each day but she isn't that fussed on them, sprouts on the other hand are a different story :p

Hi Mel
Are those all your pets? Snakes, too???:11:

They're my extended family. To be honest the snakes are the easiest of the lot. Although they are in secure terraniums some of my kids friends parents wont come into the house and we even had an internet installer refuse to do a job here because of them. :p
