So if you have read my recent post you know I have been considering a tag for my next bird but I didn't want to buy a baby I wanted to adopt but I cant find any Grey's in the shelters near me other than two sisters that have to go together. But I just found the cutest dyh amazon in a shelter near me. His name is Solly and he is 30 years old and was givin' up because his owners had to leave the country. I haven't gone to see him yet but plan to in the next few days, my question is would a dyh be a good choice? Can you amazon owners tell me everything about them please so I know if I would like to get one or not.
I just met a yellow naped amazon a couple of days ago but he was mad, his pupils were dialating like crazy, but I love the size of them and they seem so cool. I still want to do all the research before I even consider getting him.
Thank you in advance for all your help.

Good points:
1) Their body language is quite straightforward to read.
2) They are well known as being some of the best talking birds.
3) They are very active and playful.
4) They are very adaptable to changes.
5) They make a bit of fluff but not dust.
6) Their colors are bright and cheery.
Reservations:
1) They are quite changeable in mood.
2) They are easily excitable, and as we all should know by now, overexcitement can easily flip over into aggression.
3) They overbond easily, so be careful to ensure plenty of socialization opportunities with different people and teaching/training them to entertain themselves and not be completely reliant on humans for daily activities.
4) They have a tendency to become obese.

Coriander (my male DYHA) is very clever and very mischevious and likes to do sneak attack bites for fun, then cackles in laughter and congratulates himself on being "So smart!!"
Ginger (my female DYHA) is the sweetest, gentlest, most well-behaved parrot I know.

I give praises to anyone who takes in a homeless bird instead of a purchase. I hope this works out for you.

Enjru's points are very, very good.

The big parrots have such unique personalities that while you can get an idea of their personality by their species, you really need to spend as much time as possible with the individual who has caught your eye and see if you are a good match on personality.

I have a DYHA and is really happy the way he is "coming around". But I have read and agree that maby a BFA is easyer to have but the payback from a DYHA is worth all work and time. I have had Ville now for 7 month and he is 1,7 year and from the result until now I am convinsed that this is the right bird for me, he is even started to show interest in the rest of the family.

Good luck!!

Thank you guys for all the help. I have one more question, are they constantly loud? I can handle the morning and night loudness but are they constantly loud throughout the day?

Coriander and Ginger get very exuberant with a barrage of conversation and various bird shrieks and calls in the morning and late afternoon/early evening, but they just converse pleasantly during the rest of the day.

Compared to Chilli's screaming (ie, my scarlet macaw), the Amazons' noise levels are hardly even worth mentioning. Everything is relative, though, so if you haven't experienced a loudly screaming macaw, you might find an Amazon's noise levels somewhat distracting.

I have never heard a macaw in person, only on youtube. But I will go visit the amazon in couple of days.

Have fun! I just noticed that you have an existing bird called Sully. If you got Solly, that would be...hmm, weird, LOL!

Yeah it would be weird but if he has been called that for 30 years there is no sense in changing it.

Oh one more thing, what size cage do you reccomend, I know bigger is better but I'm just looking for a nice sized one. Or if you could upload links to the cages you guys like that would be awesome.
