Hi every1, just joined parrot forum. I have a Quaker parrot named Rio. He was given to the school I work at by a parent who found him. Every weekend a child would sign up to bring him home for the weekend, which didn't last very long. The teacher who had him was too busy to take care of him on weekends so I started bringing him home. My family fell in love with him. My husband works nights and Rio is there to greet him, my husband treats Rio the way he treated my kids when they were babies, I'm talking like kissing his belly, hugging him and things like that. Anyway the school gave me Rio because the kids at school couldn't pet him or anything. If a child got near the cage Rio would lunge at them like he wanted to bite them. So I have a new member of the family and we love him to death. I'm new here so I don't know if this is where I can ask questions about Rio that I'm concerned about. Please let me know worried about a runny nose.

Welcome to the forum!

Is it safe to assume that Rio's family was looked for but never found?

If you have a simple cold, then no, Rio is in no harm! Birds can't catch a cold! However, the bacteria from our mouths or even our nose can still be harmful to him, so no kisses, and if your hands touch your mouth or nose, better wash them prior to handling Rio!

Yes, this is the perfect place for all your questions! Most of us are experienced parrot owners, and we'll do whatever we can to help, but if something serious pops up don't hesitate to seek professional help from an avian vet.

Have you taken him in for his first checkup yet?

Hello Dottie and welcome to the forum,
First things first, you should get Rio to a certified Avian Vet ASAP if he has not yet been to see one since he was found. I am assuming the Rio is the one with the runny nose. Usually a bird with a runny nose or sneezing with discharge can been a sign of something wrong. I say usually because sometimes it may not be but since this bird is fairly new to you, you're unable to compare his current behavior with how he has appeared over a period of time.

Ty Molly, When Rio was found they brought him to an Avian Vet and gave Rio a check-up and said Rio was in great health. Rio is acting just fine , its just when I got home from work he sneezed a few time and they were wet sneezes. His nose isn't running now, but I just dont know if that normal, just worried that he is catching a cold or something and dont want it to get any worse.

Guess I read that wrong!

Birds can't catch a cold. Dry sneezes are *usually* ok, but wet sneezes, especially repeated wet sneezes is a cause for concern and best to get him checked out.

Still wondering if any effort was made to find his previous owners?
