Doing my research on Macaws

I've always loved macaws, everyone i met was well behaved and craved human interaction. i'd eventually like to take one in but i want to make sure i do all the research i can before i do anything. Everyone i've talked to in person has said they're B&G were quiet and never yelled but i have been reading a lot of folks have come across/have some that scream.

So my question is how common is it for the B&G's to be loud?

All macs are LOUD and some are deafening

Yes blue and golds can be loud. They have calls that are meant to be heard by flock members over a vast distance in the wild. My macaw can be quiet all day, other days not so much. To expect them not to get loud on occasion is unrealistic. That being said they shouldn't be screaming nonstop all day.

cant comment on B&G as such but my greenwing (which i do hear are loud less often) hardly makes a squawk.

she natters away but only really goes for it if the environment shes in is getting loud (lots of people talking loud, music too loud etc)

probably get the odd random squawk a couple times a week, and for 5-10 seconds max

but as said above, if you're near her when shes going for it... its deafening.

So i guess the better question is (and some of you have already touched on this) how frequently do they generally get loud?

My BTM is about half as loud as a GW and she can still be LOUD.
As a general rule she gives her flock call in the morning when we get up and again at bed time. She will also call when she hears me drive up after work.

My guy yells when he hears me come home. (I listen to loud music, so the boom boom gives me away)
And every few days we go on the porch and giver, together. He really enjoys being loud sometimes. He also will yells if he sees large birds flying out the window, and when different people are in the house and wants attention.
That sounds like a lot, but it's not.
I consider him to be fairly quiet. He chatters and talks lots. And loves to make his sound effects and play.
He likes our porch scream offs just before the sun goes down. Right now it's around 7:30-8. We just go out on the porch and scream, together. It's fun, bonding, and since I've done that I feel like he's less inclined to do it in the house randomly. He will ask to go outside. I just tell him, in a whisper to "call her" and he goes at it. Lol.

That depends on whether or not you train the bird to scream...

I have a friend that has a B&G with zero manners. Set the bird down, if it sees you it screams to be picked up, and continues to scream until, guess what, it gets picked up... and every time this bird throws a fit, it gets picked up.

Ergo, the bird has been trained to throw a fit, and scream.

Don't want that? STRUCTURE THE INTERACTION, TEACH THE BIRD TO PLAY ON IT'S OWN...

They still vocalize a couple of times a day. Feeding time, when I get home from work, when they know it's pick me up time... other than that? Not a peep...

IF YOU TRAIN THEM PROPERLY... If not, don't complain about the bird doing exactly what you trained it to do.

Knowledge is required with toos and big macs especially. Problem birds are created. They don't come that way.
