Dog allergic to birds?

I'm dog sitting my sister's Laso Apso for a few months and since he has been in my house he have started to scratch and lick himself a lot. It's not fleas and I'm starting to wonder if he might be allergic to the Macaws. Has anyone else heard of or dealt with this?

Probably best to get a vet to clarify this before any major conclusions are reached IMO.

If it was a bigger dog I'd say slip it a half a benadryl....but with a tiny dog I'd consult a vet first.

Start by providing the dog with a bath. Find out from Sis what, how often and when was the last time she had her dog bathed. May need a fur clip by now also!

Bet Sis didn't say anything about needing a bath and clip, nor did she provide the funds. Some of these guys need it monthly!

She did. She has him bathed and groomed every few weeks, anything more often and his skin dries out and gets dandruff. The dog (Spartacus or Sparky) was scratching and licking witching hours of being back in the house after grooming last week. She's paying for grooming and such, we are just watching him for a while because the only decent and affordable apartment around wants $1000 down payment for pets so she is saving up for it... And I don't mind because the dog is pretty chill... And a rescue as well. Something about my families and loving previously abused animals. :04:

Glad to hear that your family is miles ahead of most!

MAC's can push a fair amount of dust and an allergic reaction is possible.

But, I would be talking to the folks that bath the dog first to see if they have changed the shampoo that they are using. A dog with a dry skin problem is more than likely reacting to that issue. Whether Humans or Dogs, shampoos /soaps that have salt cause more problems then you can believe. The Dog care people (whatever they are called) should be bathing this dog with a very mild shampoo and 'possible' using a conditioner that helps limit dry skin conditions.

The dry skin issue could be an issue with low minerals, low Vits or low protein in the dogs diet. Read the package and see what the values are for each item.

Yes, I am circling away from the Mac's Dust. This due more to the type of reaction that the dog is having than may not wanting to believe that it is the MAC.

When you speak or communicate with your Sis next; ask what her Vet is saying about the dry skin issue!

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. My dog went through a skin issue where he itched and lost hair (it was not mange) and though the "cause" was never discovered, a nutritional supplement snapped him right out of it.

My dog gets itchy due to the seasons. Now that it's fall he's starting to lose his summer coat and is itching like a madman and shedding everywhere. It's not even cold yet Rocky. Staaaaaaahp. D:

Small dog, if they are particularly focusing on the hind quarters it could be a blocked anal gland. This is some thing small dogs are quite prone to. Our teacup yorkie gets it with some frequency. Easy fix.

The tell tale sign for our dog is stiff hairs on her haunch. When she had impacted glands she licks her rear so much the hairs at the base of her spine are stiff like they were styled with hair gel.

There are all sorts of allergies and issues for dogs--- could be a bacterial or fungal infection, could be an allergy to something in his food (wheat and corn are common), could be something in your house (bird, mold, something in carpet)...could be an allergy to a soap or grooming product..or even mites....could also be the bird, but I'd rule out the rest before assuming that (although it's possible)...

If it's the butt, it could be anal gland issues (sometimes these need to be extracted manually-they get filled up with a NASTY fishy smelling substance and they can get irritated when this happens.

I'd definitely get the vet to take a look.
