...allow you to pet him/her?? When Amy is on his perch stick,100% of the time I can pet him from his neck all the way down to his rudder. However,if he is on my leg or T-stand he'll fidget and turn his head with beaky open a bit.

Lately he has been asking for lots more head skritches. I don't feel any pinnies on his head or neck. When I gently skritch his cheek he turns into a big pile of green mush,eyes closed and head eventually laying flat on my leg I can gently rub his beaky and he'll gently beak my finger tip and stick out his tongue and lick it..

Parrots are odd creatures..

Nope! Kiwi shall NOT be defiled by filthy human hands Kisses, however, are usually accepted pretty much everywhere. We suspect somewhere in his past someone used to torment Kiwi or possibly even hurt him with their hands and that's why he is so adverse towards them yet clearly likes and trusts us.

Consider yourself lucky Amy lets you pet her!!!

Just got mine about 3 weeks ago. She lets me pet her anywhere except near her feet. She also likes to be on my shoulder when doing any type of musical anything. She'll nibble my ear when I play well, and likes to contribute vocally the minute she sees anything get powered on. Loses her parrot mind, actually...and goes through her new repertoire. (Stuff we've been training her to do)



Every now and then she'll surprise us with something completely out of left field. Hysterical chuckle was last night's featured entertainment. We couldn't stop laughing once she started, so she varied it up and kept going with it for 20 minutes.

Bingo Let's me both pet and scratch him. It took time to get him to let me pet his back. At first he did not like it. I think it goes against the male birds instinct to have weight on their back.

I was able to both pet and scratch Pacho. It was a bit of a risk doing that.
She had a habit of changing her mind in the blink of an eye and giving me a good chomp without warning.
2 because Pacho was female petting her on the back could lead to egg laying. It never did but it was obvious she liked it a little bit too much.

Of my 2 new Amazons (Luna and Merlin) Luna is still fearful of hands so what will happen in the future is unknown.
Merlin I have had some luck in petting but not scratching. He is not so afraid of hands so I think the chances are good he will tame easily to allow handling.

BTW I was watching them closely and they are both right footed.

I can pet my Sammy anytime and anywhere I want. He loves it. I go over to his playtop and put my hand on the top. He comes over and holds my hand with his right foot while I pet him all over. Then I pick him up and he sits on the couch with us. He walks back and forth between us to get petted by both. My husband can put his whole head in his hand and scratch everywhere. He is just a love buggy Amazon!

George the YCA loved getting skritches. He would keep me at it until it felt like my arm would fall off-- and beyond that. Eyes closed, head bent way over, just like Amy.

Sammy sounds like an amazing bird, cherish him.
I never had much luck with amazons, the constant loud noises, loud talking and unexpected biting was too much for me.

Nope, not anymore. Not the past 28 years or so. I can touch him through the cage bars, but no other time.

I love my Sam very much. We have had him for going on 36 years, since he was 11 weeks old. I could write a book on all of the things about him that are great! I guess it is the amount of time we have been together and all of the time we spend with him that has turned him into such a good bird. I have never let him go over to the dark side. Even when he was biting, I still went back for more. My philosophy has always been that he is being a parrot, and that is what parrots do with the flock in the wild. Since we are now the flock, we have to participate in that behavior also.

Yes, there has been blood and pain, but I never blamed him. Of course, it was always my fault, since I am not a parrot! Now, that he is an " adult " he has mellowed quite a bit. Still gets a little randy sometimes, but nothing we can't handle. I hope for many more years with my little Sammy.

Gloria doesn't like hands. No scritches or stepping up. She acts frightened of hands. In the 3 years she's been with us, she's made progress by taking tiny treats out of an outstretched hand but she won't go near hands otherwise. She does give kisses and climbed on daddy's shoulder one night. She clearly loves us and calls the minute I leave the room. She was 30 when she came here and seemed to be well loved. The hands thing is a mystery though.

You know, I think that it's possible that since you moved, Amy is wanting more daddy-love...When you combine Amy wanting more scritches lately with the anxious chewing of his feet/toenails lately, both since you moved, I think you're seeing his bit of anxiety about the move/new environment showing-through...He did live in the same place for how many years, so it's completely normal for him to feel some anxiety/nervousness and to want some more comforting from his dad.

I think he is doing considerably well despite our move. Last night he allowed "Uncle David" to skritch his head,only for a second though..but still..he NEVER allowed David to get that close before!

Salty loves to be scratched anywhere on his head and neck, even on his ceres, and hard too. He turns his head to present different parts of his head too, like a cheek or neck. He gets so carried away he will shove his head into a cupped hand and just go to town rubbing a,ll over.
