Tui, a 3 year old rescued CAG.
I came home tonight and saw that my bird chipped her beak all the way around about 3/4 of the way down - near the end/tip but far enough up that It cant be ground off. Im not familar with what you can do with and without beaks. Id love some info!

I can take a pic if you need.

Shes grinding her beak a lot and making clicking noises a ton! Not just noises but a click like shes popping her beak back and forth or something.

P.S. - wheres the CAG bird icon???

Beaks are living tissue, think of them like a human tooth. They're tough, but they have nerves and can hurt.

Here's a link that has suggestions on what actions o take. A crack won't grow back together, but will grow out. The website suggests that if it isn't painful to your bird or bothering her, you don't need to take any action.

Personally, I'd probably take her to the vet...just in case.

Thanks! ;) Shes acting completely normal. Im not going to rush her to the vet quite yet :) Although I do want to DNA test her.

If she can move the actual broken piece then I would take her to the vet. There are blood vessels in the beak too and bleeding can occur.

Its on the top of her beak, not a crack in the beaks sides, etc. Its like a chip on top of her beak. Ill add a pic.

You asked if the beak needs urgent attention and it seems as if the forum members are saying yes but you are saying you are not going to rush her off to the vet??

I just thought people were getting the wrong idea of what the chip was so I wanted to send this first. I am also getting mixed messages bc that post I Read earlier said if shes not in pain and acting normal that not to worry. Id rather you guys actually look at the chip first

If your Parrot's beak should ever "break" it will often grow back on its own. If not, an Avian Vet will bond his beak until it grows back. With any damage or abnormality with the beak, I advise a vet visit ASAP
Please keep us updated

That is a very unusual sound your bird is making. I would want the assurance of an avain vet before waiting to see what happens.

Yah its like shes scraping her beak together. Shes done it since I got her.

Actually, my grey makes this same sound. The chip looks like a layer may have just broken off due to rough play. To be on the safe side you may want to have your grey checked.

Thats what I figured. I figure shes trying to grind down her beak or something? And boy does she play rough, almost ALL of the time! lol

Ok guys. Took her to the vet... they said its probably from some trauma but could also be a bacterial infection but is less likely. They dremeled her beak and put some mineral oil on it.

She gave me some pain meds to give 2 x a day (injections). The one thing that is making me really upset is that Tui, since yesterday, has been biting me BADLY. She wont let me go near her. She wont come out of the cage. Shes still playing and eating/drinking but wont let me near her at all! She puffs up and tries to bite anything that goes near her. She actually broke skin a few times in the last 2 days.

Im kind of worried and confused as to why shes being so bitey and intensely aggressive...

Any ideas?

The one thing I am happy about is when the vet went to the back, she said to a colleague: "This girl has done a REALLY good job with this bird!" -- I was so happy. She met Tui when I first brought her in and she was SO messed up. Feathers missing, sores, and more!

Did she start biting after the vet appointment and you giving her injections? She may just be traumatized. Also if she has some pain she this may cause her to bite. Glad your vet took care of her beak. I am wondering why she did not give oral pain meds instead of injectable. If she is eating, playing she may not even need the pain meds.

She started biting me badly yesterday... So im thinking its pain? She wont let me near her at all. Shes definitely still eating, pooping, playing. I couldnt even get her out of her cage today and shes usually the first to want to come out!

Sometimes you have to take two steps back to gain that one forward. Keep your distance and offer treats and lots of praise. Leave her cage open and walk away. If she feels comfortable she will come out. Don't force her to do anything she doesn't want to do and have patience.
