i am the mom of three parrots:
Dorothy- African grey (cag)
Bowie- blue and gold macaw
Nellie- hyacinth macaw
Reggie- hyacinth macaw
Marnie- white bellied caique
I know that some time in the future I would like to add one more bird to my flock. I have a short list, one of the birds on my list is a hawk head parrot. I know they are quite hard to find, I met a women that has one yesterday and it reignited that interest in this breed. I am just wondering if anyone here has any experience with one. I have done some research in the past and found that it may be very difficult to actually find a baby. I spent quite awhile on you tube last night and I am in love.

I know where you can get babies, wrong time of year but i;ll ask if you want.I can also give some people to contact for info about having one as a pet. i'd love one myself but have a full plate as is,LOL

henpecked that would be great! Not quite ready to buy yet but would love to find out how they are as pets! I keep thinking they sound a bit "amazon" like however different in many ways as well.

I've heard they can be aggressive to other hawkheads but don't know that to be fact. Maybe someone with some experience will chime in. The indians used to catch them by placing a tame one on a tree branch covered with tar or a snare and catch passing birds who could not pass up a chance attacking the one out in the open. Of course they were catching them for food. Just a bit of trivia. I'll PM you some contact info OH YEAH, we have a new member who has a Hawkhead named Cochise, maybe we'll hear from her.

I am getting one soon, but I don't know what their personality is really like. I only know this one, and he's really sweet with some people and some people he will attack. He gets along with other birds, though.

Hello, I am the one who has Cochise. What would you like to know about them? I can tell you they are like no other bird. They are very special, and very aware of their surroundings. Much more than other birds. This equates to a cautious and wary bird, always on the lookout for any intruder in their area.{bugs, new toys, strangers, etc} Let me know how else I can help. Oh they love to eat and make the cutest yummy sound when it is something they really like.

I'm going through a few growing pains atm, but my HH is one of the best pets, let alone birds, I have ever had. I got her right after she hatched, and took her home when she was on 3 feedings. She is very much a unique bird, but if I had to compare, I'd say....take an Amazon, add Caique energy and mischief, and a small dog. She loves to wrestle. I've heard HH's can be very aggressive to some, especially outside their "flock", and while I do see those tendencies in mine, I keep taking her to different places, meeting new people, and getting lots of attention and exposure. She is generally well behaved, but she does get really defensive/jealous at times. HH's are territorial, and I have never seen another species go on the offensive when defending their "flock" as much as Ellie does, but stay on top of them and they'll come out just fine.

Heh, I guess I really do have an attack parrot...

Also, as a warning, Ellie has no qualms about going after big targets...B&G's, GWM's, U2's, cats, dogs, etc. She is fearless when it comes to protecting and playing, so if you find one, keep a close eye on them so they don't get in over their head....though they usually win.
Don't let it turn you off though. 90% of the time, she's playing, or cuddling, or just bein a real big sweetheart.

Hi. I'm a newbie here and new to the world of parrot forums

I'm looking to get my first companion parrot, although I'm not new to birds, I'm new to owning parrots.

I'm very interested in anything about Hawkheaded parrots, particularly if anyone knows any reputable conscientious breeders in the UK, ideally in the north although I'll travel. I'd love to talk to someone who breeds them, give them more information about myself and see if a HH might be the right bird for me.

Do you think a HH would be okay being left alone for some time each day while I work? (I at least four hours each day with my cockatiels.) From what I've learned of HH I understand they need large cage and plenty of toys to keep them stimulated as I've read they are very active birds but I gather they are also fairly independent?

Thanks

You can order back issues of parrots magazine, i bought the issue with the hawk headed parrot on it, its the older issue. I am very fascinated by these birds myself and enjoy reading about them. I found that issue of parrots mag to be very informative. It sounds to me like they are really not a flock bird. It can even be hard to get hawk heads to except a mate. They are protective of their areas and people. They can be aggressive with other birds. I think they would do well with an experienced parrot owner. I just think they are stunning.

Hi !! I have a Hawkhead and shes WONDERFUL.Sorry I cant help you with a breeder [I live in the states] But I can tell you all about Charlotte ,ask away :):):)

Older picture of Charlotte [shes afraid of the camera] The desciptions on Hawkheads on the internet dont describe her at all.

I have two HH's now and they are as different as night and day. Yuna is a little lovebug. She was nearly dead when she came into my life. She talks, loves everyone, and is just adorable. She has only one foot, but that does not slow her down!
